AN EMBARRASSING MOMENT LEADS TO A MISSED LESSON IN LIFE

The other day a witnessed an incident involving another person that could have been a life lesson for them. As it turned out it was a life lesson, but for me instead.

As an average looking house mom was leaving the local grocery store, she did so without her rear door/hatch being fully closed and locked. As she accelerated toward a stop light all her groceries spilled out and splattered on the ground. The sound of hissing soda cans caught the attention of every pedestrian in the area and they all watched as she got out, stepped through the debris to close the hatch, and then raced away.

Certainly, this was an embarrassing moment and perhaps it contributed to a hasty decision, but ultimately she committed an act of bad citizenship. She turned an embarrassing incident into an embarrassment of character and she missed a valuable lesson in the process.

At the moment following the getaway, all the collective witnesses came together to resolve the problem in her stead. All the traffic came to a stop, that enabled the passers-by to enter the street and clean the mess. The drivers joined too and in just another moment the street was clean again and order restored. And all those who participated felt better for having done it and certainly they all wondered about the actions of the woman.

If the woman had stayed and took responsibility she would have been rewarded with the help of all these same people. Instead, she fled and presumably took with her guilt and panic and a lack of groceries. Did she drive elsewhere to rebuy her supplies, did she go without, how long until she felt comfortable returning to the scene of the crime.

In these moments we make choices that ultimately reveals our character.

Lesson learned!
