Assumptions

in #life6 years ago

This is a true life story.

She said a resounding “yes” having waited for a long time expecting this proposal like forever. 'What took him so long to finally propose' she thought. They have been friends for about two years, their names were Tobi and Princess.

"Princess, I love you so much. I can't imagine my life without you. I want you to be my wife and mother of my children. I hope it is not too late to ask you to spend the rest ......." Tobi was confessing his love to Princess just before Princess’ roommate woke her up.

"Wake up Princess, it is time to prepare for work." Ifunaya said as Princess reached out for her stopwatch.

This is not the first time Ifunaya tapped Princess’ to wake up. “Ifunaya, you have done it again,” was the first words Princess uttered as she opened her eyes. And to think she interrupted her when Tobi was about reciting his love poem and affirming his love to her made her angry.

The dream seemed so real that she could still feel goosebumps when she woke up. She was still thinking about the dream when Tobi called early that morning to check up on her as he usually does.

For weeks she remembered that dream and she couldn’t stop smiling, because she felt she needed no one to tell her that Tobi is in love with her.

Tobi had all the characters she seeks in a man, he is spirit filled, kind, generous, nice, caring, romantic and he is not the type of man with the African myopic mentality. He encourages her to be better and successful in career, she couldn't have asked for someone better. He was just perfect and ideal. So she thought.

Her world almost came crashing down the day she saw his wedding invitation over the Internet. She did not pay so much attention to the invitation card at first because she never imagined that her prince charming will be getting married to someone else. It was later that same day that she surfing the Internet that she saw congratulatory messages sent to Tobi and his response to every message.

"This can't be true, I must be having one of those dreams which my roommate will come and interrupt soon." She thought.

She picked her phone and dialed his number immediately to confirm what she saw, but the call didn't go through because he was on another call. She tried calling him several other times but still go the same response from the service provider “...the subscriber you dialed is on another call, please call back later. Thank you.”

“He may be talking to his fiancé over the phone,” she thought. The thought of it caused disdain in her heart, she was heart-broken and would resolve to committing suicide if presented the opportunity.

So, she decided to surfing over the Internet with Tobi’s fiancé’ name and discovered that herself and Tobi’s fiancé have 29 mutual friends on Facebook. This made her skimmed through all her profile picture. "She is not a match to my beauty,” she said with so much pride.

Having checked her profile pictures, she reassured herself Tobi wouldn't leave her for anyone, as though they were in a relationship. She dropped her phone I shock when she stumbled upon their pre-wedding photos. The thought of “why didn’t Tobi say anything to me about his wedding” clouded her mind. “I thought we were best of friends. Even if he did not propose to me he would have at least told me about his fiancé,” Princess exclaimed.

She sat on the floor and cried her eyes out. After crying a while she remembered the words of her roommate, Ifunaya, who always warned her about assumptions, she told her several times to be careful with how close she was to Tobi.

A simple question like; “where is this friendship headed?” would have saved her of this heartache. "If a man wants you he will say it in plain words, you don't need to start guessing before you know he wants you or not," were the words of Ifunaya said to Princess.

Princess had built her entire life around Tobi and have recently renamed him to ‘my prince charming’ on her phonebook. Not only that, she had rejected two proposals early that year without considering her options, hoping that her prince charming will propose soon.

She congratulated Tobi on WhatsApp and tried to pretending everything was alright. Moving on was more difficult than she thought, so she opened up to her roommate about Tobi’s wedding, who consoled me and reminded her of how she warned her several times.

As weeks went on, she kept saying to herself she is young and would eventually meet her prince charming someday. It was after going through this emotional trauma that she knew assumptions is dangerous. Several years passed and she was still very much single. Tobi is married with two kids, while Princess was still waiting on God at age thirty (30). I believe it is about time we start redefining our relationship so we may not end up as Princess did, who lived her entire life in assumptions. Thank you.
