The Secret of Scent: Adventures in Perfume and the Science of Smell

in #life6 years ago (edited)

A while ago I found out about an interesting book that I immediately fell in love with and this is how I came up with the idea of naming my account 'sweetscentof98'. This book has eventually motivated me to write an article about the main subject of the book: scents.

Written by Luca Turin, The Secret of Scent presents itself as a promising lecture and an initiate in the art of perfumes.

The Secret of Scent is a book about science by way of art, in which the author's passion for perfume leads him to the scientific mystery of what makes one molecule smell of garlic while another smells of rose. Readers who know Luca Turin as the lively central figure in Chandler Burr's The Emperor of Scent will remember the ongoing debate between two competing theories of smell—one based on molecular shape, the other on molecular vibrations. Now Turin himself describes in detail the science, evidence, and long history of this debate, from the beginnings of organic chemistry to the present day, and pays homage to those before him who got it right. This fascinating and accessible account will appeal to anyone who has ever wondered about smell, still the most mysterious of the senses.--- Source

Every scent is unique and even though we often feel like some are alike, each one is subtly different and has its own mistery. Scents are very personal and they are a card of visit for every individual, unfortunately, we do not give it the attention it should have.

There is something magical related to scents, it is beyond touches, looks or words. Fragrances are prefered in a more natural state, but how does nature give us those desired senses? People are always looking for a product that fulfills, rapidly, fearfully and cheaply,  the perfect scent for their feelings.

🍭 Some prefer sweet scents (guess who's one of those people 💓) such as vanilla, chocolate or powdered sugar aromas. That type of individual tends to be more sensitive, more delicate, refined, in touch with fashion, design and art, defines the charm itself and optimism.

🍭 Some have a passion for more natural, earthy fragrances such as weak scented flowers, fruits, wood,  and  grass(The smell of fresh cut grass...). This type of individual is more in touch with mother nature than artificial, modern things, tends to be more vribrant and prefers to be free, doesn't mind loneliness, loves to meditate and get involved in outdoor activities.

🍭 And last but not least the ones that prefer oriental aromas such as spices(cinnamon) or exotic flowers, those individuals love to stand out, are bold and embrace their sensuality, they are romantic and full of confidence.

When you're creating a fragrance, you're always thinking about what you want that first smell to be, that first reaction. It's a sensation, like a symphony with all of those layers and notes. I love the way it changes and the way it dries down. The fun thing about scent is that it's unique to everyone; pheromones take on a new scent. L'Wren Scott--- Source
