I prefer to stay in with all the fireworks and it getting dark so early! Plus I don't have kids. I think that is what makes Halloween really fun - seeing it through a child's eyes!
I think you are right. It is something very special to a child! My stepson loves today more than any other holiday... typical 10 year old boy I guess! :)
