Majoring the Minor

This post is pretty dangerous, at least for me. I might receive hate mails, but I believe that some will hear the timely nugget of wisdom in the following words. I’ll go on.

You wake up. Grab your smartphone. Checked news feeds and tweets. Took a #goodMorning, #Don’t ForgetGodToday! selfie. Forgot to pray. Ignored the Bible. Turned-on the TV. Watched the news. Bad news. Bad news. Gossip. Bad News. Gossip. Gossip. Useless ranting of an irate politician. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Good news. Bad news. Bad news. Bad news. Sports update. Sports update. Gossip. Gossip. Gossip. Gossip. Gossip. Gossip. Gossip. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. Turned-off the TV. Seized your tablet. Tried to beat up Flaffy Bird - for 37 minutes and 23 seconds. You gave up, little bit depressed. Switched to Candy Crush. Tried to overcome level 373 where you’ve been stuck for 1 week and 3 days. No luck. Opened YouTube. Watched the top 5 recommendations. Then another random video. Then another. Then another. Then another. Then another. Then another. Your wife entered the room asking if you can take your son to his baseball practice. “I have no time! Can’t you see that I’m researching stuff for our sales meeting?” you said without bothering to look at her eyes because yours are stuck on the tablet screen with the latest K-Pop video playing. A Facebook message popped-up on the screen from your daughter telling you to get out of the bedroom, well, because it’s already 10:51 AM and you still haven’t eaten your breakfast, P.S. Don’t forget to brush your teeth first.

Congratulations! You just spent almost whole of your Saturday morning.

Sounds like your Saturday morning? I’m not spying on you. Really.

  • Sure you can answer this, what’s the major things on the items above - those things that are really important, and what are the minors?

Please don’t hate me for asking this - are you majoring on majors? Or goofing around minors?

Some people are more adept on minor things, and undeniably spent and spending their precious time on things and activities that are really deserving of a blink. They consumed lots of things that are unessential and even harmful, then they question God and life why their life feels so consumed and flooded with nonsensical thoughts and stuff.

Some know more about their favorite basketball player stats than their finances.

Some know more about a controversial celebrity while they are clueless about their health.

Some have more commercial lines memorized in their heads than words of their God written in their hearts.

I hope you’re not the guy who keeps on ranting on how he can fix the problem of the government (and of the whole world) while he keeps on ignoring the undeniable problems in his family because of his bad habits.

It’s easier to watch TV the whole afternoon than take time to play with your naughty son. But what’s more fulfilling? It’s certainly the play with your son. You might feel more exhausted, but you’d feel more human than a couch potato.

It’s easier to scroll and scroll on Facebook than read your Bible. But please don’t just get a like, get a life!

It’s easier to watch nonsense videos on YouTube than pray. But those nonsense are still nonsense at the end of the day and at the end of your life, wouldn’t it be better if get more sense and meaning because you keep on talking to your Father every day?

Living is choosing - intentionally, intelligently, prayerfully. Pathetic lives are for those who are passive consumers and active blamers. Flourishing lives are for those who are decisive individuals - guided by God, timeless wisdom and sane practicality.

Minor on minors. Major on majors. Want a pathetic life? Then reverse the formula, but the blame is for yourself.

Remember that death - our life’s graduation would be the best moment of our life if we invested it on majors. But it’s sure that it would be the worst if we spent our life on minors.

Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.
