The Boxing Day Hunt

Fox hunting originated in England in the sixteenth century and was practised in its traditional form until February 2005, when a law banning the activity in England and Wales came into effect.

Since the ban, rural hunting culture has continued to thrive although the customary pursuit of red foxes has been somewhat replaced by the practice of drag hunting in which the pack pursues an artificial scent laid down by a person on foot, dragging a material soaked in the scent across the landscape.

Boxing day hunts occur across the British Isles and are an important part of the rural cultural calendar.

This looks similar to drag hunting, but there are key differences, including the fact that hounds are still trained to follow an animal-based scent. This means that when the trail hunts go out, their hounds often pick up the scent of a real animal, chase it and kill it – then the hunts claim that it was an “accident”.

Hello @timothyallen Sir, how do you do?

If this be the case, then what is the use of the ban which came into effect in Feb 2005?

Obviously, the usefulness of the ban is that it works sometimes. It is of use to some foxes and not others.

Of course, @timothyallen Sir, what you said is correct. When I read that news, I was really upset that the law ban was unable to stop the cruelty meted to the foxes fully. With the ban, the impact has been reduced somewhat and that means a lot. Thanks for enlightening my mind, Sir.
