Summer Vacation…where to go this year?

Myrtle Beach

I remember back in the summer of 2013 driving to Myrtle Beach to have our sons see the ocean for the first time. We picked Myrtle Beach because we heard it was the most visited beach (13-14 million visitors per year) on the east coast. As we hopped in the car at night and starting on our way, we went through many states and ate breakfast in Tennessee, our 7 year old enjoyed the waffles at Waffle House, that became his favorite restaurant. As we arrived in Myrtle Beach it was down pouring with rain. My wife and I looked at each other, hoping that this was a good idea and it would clear up. We rented a room from a Wyndam Resort with an ocean view. It was nice and clean plus we were really close to the ocean. The rain stopped and it was swimsuit time. The boys ran into the water and quickly tasted the salt from the Atlantic Ocean, an entirely new experience for them. We were having a blast as the boys loved the ocean.

As with all resorts, we had timeshare sales people trying to sell us a timeshare. We did get a great view out of it, but decided to pass on the offer.

We even got the chance to watch fireworks from the beach, here's our youngest.

Heading to DC
We stayed in Myrtle Beach for a few days and then decided to head north to DC as we never been there before. I remember driving up through North Carolina and Virginia then being on the highway at 6pm in traffic and spotting the Capitol Building. It was a surreal feeling, just because it was our first time seeing the federal buildings and to think of all the history and decisions made, it was a feeling I never really felt before.

I remember showing my sons the Federal Reserve, pictured below. Many people know the history of the Federal Reserve and to be able to stand there was cool after learning the real story behind it.

We drove through briefly through DC and went to the Lincoln Memorial at dusk.

It was a quick visit, but well worth it!

New Experiences and Places

My wife and I agree that it’s important for us to give our boys new experiences and this was one trip that was a lot of fun and memorable. Hopefully you’re able to visit and gather new experiences this summer. Where’s a good place for summer vacation this year?
