Are you a calm or tense person? Are you a positive or negative person? Are you a happy or bitter person?

When we are alone in our rooms, it is much easier to distinguish the state of our emotions and we commonly consider them positive. However, who are we when we face someone else? If I consider myself a calm person, why do I feel tense when I am next to certain people? If I consider myself a happy person, why do some people make me feel bitter easily?

If this sounds familiar to you, it is because you have not yet discovered your true emotional state. Your feelings depend on your comfort zone to be positive. When we leave our comfort zone (in this case, the people we prefer) we test if we really are what we think we are.

If you manage to stay calm with both your best friend and the bank teller who has a bad attitude, you could begin to say that you are a calm person. If you maintain a happy attitude with your favorite cousin, as well as with your nosy aunt, you could begin to say that you are a happy person.

This is not an easy task. We tend to have "favorite people" who have the privilege of knowing the best of us. However, with a little effort we can maintain some kind of "emotional standard" with the people around us, as well as with strangers. This will help us later to expand this "emotional standard" to more challenging facets of our lives, such as getting away from home, facing financial problems, dealing with break ups, etc.

Questioning who we really are in everyday life will help us identify aspects of our being that we want to change or strengthen for more challenging situations in the future.
