Youth and alcohol

In the Netherlands you are only allowed to drink alcohol when you are 18 years or older. This is by law. It used to be 16 but the government raised the age by two years.

There was a lot of commotion at that time and it still is difficult to maintain . If I look at my own youth, I think I was 15 years when I had my first beer. It was even at a local pub. That's not imaginable today anymore. Kids only can get into a bar at 16 and get a wristband stating they are minor and can't drink alcohol. When a pub does serve alcohol to minor's they can get big fines or even closure (if it happens often).

The way I am writing this is because something happend at our soccerclub, where I am in the board. On a newyears reception a lot of members where celebrating 2020, including youth members. The personel behind the bar are all volunteers, because of the amount of people they weren't capable to look into the kantine if all people drinking were 18 years or older.

After a hour two people came in and where walking around the crowd observing.... I t turned out they were of the local government. They caught two kids of age 17 who were drinking a beer, they got the beer of friends who were 18 and bought it at the bar and gave it to them at a table. The boys both got fined with a fine of 95 euro's, and that's quiet a lot when you go to school. Of one of the boys his parents were at the party too, and although the didn't bpther him drinking a beer he still got fined cause the law is the law... I agree to that but do have some problems with it....

I think when you forbid it they will find a way to drink for sure and than without control. My oldest son is sixteen and I don't mind him drinking a beer at special occasions, as long as he doens't take advantage of it... With that I do not see any harm.

I do understand it can cause a big problem when youth start drinking at a very early age without any controls to it, but I am sure they will find a less pleassant way if you forbid them.

At what age are kids/youth permitted to drink in your country and what is your own opinion?

Im looking forward to your comments,

Have a great day,

Peter

In The Netherlands it is allowed to drink at any age of 16 within domestic environment. Outside that environment it is 18. As to find at Wikiand our government website: "De leeftijdsgrenzen gelden niet voor schenken van alcoholhoudende dranken in de privésfeer." The translation is as mentioned before " The age limit does not apply to consumption of alcoholic beverages in private settings." Alas, by law it is prohibited by youngster under the age of 18. As I am Italian of origin, I grew up with my father drinking Chianti at the dinner table. You can imagine it did not take long for us to drink the same, ofcourse heavily water diluted, nevertheless my first encounter was at the age of 8...

True, and thank you for pointing that out.

21 is the legal age in the US. There are some states where you are allowed to drink at a younger age with parental consent and supervision, but that is not the case in the state when I live.

21 , but don't younger people drink on private parties? That's what's happening a lot.

Oh I am sure, but it is illegal. The cops show up you are screwed.
