the lifes and deaths in my job - mafia funeral
I was sent for another job near Archangelsk (thats what I call shithole..google where it is!). It sounded simple. A young project manager seemed not to be up for his work. I was supposed to go there, set things with him in order and to show him how the work is done. Some smaller issues were bothering the steering committee, the damage done was too much for this sort of small construction side. Again it was about the foundation, which was poured incorrectly this time. I hop into my plane and arrive. Boris, my translator, previous profi kickboxer and speznas (he really was, that's why I always have him with me. This time only for translations though) was picking me up with an insult of car and brought me to the construction side.
"Projectmanager no fault! ... Fundament appeared like ghost....., Blyat concrete quality!".....
Sure thing, lets look around first. The problem is that concrete needs a proper mixture of cement, water and sand. Too much or too rough sand and the whole mass gets porous and is not able to carry anything. So it can be quite sturdy and a 5x5 meter area which goes 3m deep of concrete is not that easy to remove again. When a foundation is wrongly casted it must be redone or an alternative needs to be found - my task. So after I surveyed everything and found out that some sort of UBER - Vitali used nearly nothing but sand i started by scanning through the protocols. A foundation at that position is supposed to have only very few sand. The timetable said, that the concrete is supposed to be poured not before the next week. Neither foreman nor project manager were able to tell me who poured it. They were without words.
The 24 year old German project manager had my condolences. He was not able to get through the 50 year old Russian construction veterans, which were in withdrawal. Wait, why withdrawal? This over motivated Kraut-Kevin* coming fresh from university made the critical mistake to take away the alcohol from the Russian construction veterans. He lost from that moment on. It already happened that his car was surrounded by crawler excavators on a Friday evening - all workers with keys already gone. 30km to the next city, 20km to the next, hardly to use street. And that in a Russian winter from Archangelsk. Since the energy at the side already was closed and the controlling box was locked, he couldn't call anybody.
Mobile signal in the Russian Gulag? Keep on dreaming. He decided to go for a 2 days weekend with potatoes and the
confiscated vodka. Nastrovje! At least there was some wood to burn and he tried himself at hunting (learning by doing)
The main problem still was the foundation though. The workers didn't know either where it came from. I couldn't rely on their statements though, since they knew that the project manager would be responsible in the end - so those Vitalis said everything they could think of to blame him. The project was not too big and the committee didn't want to hear anything from it any more.
The project was supposed to become a routinised project and not some exception. So i was bestowed on with GodMode. FCK YEAH! I started bringing some piece by moving the project manager to Moskau into the office, where he couldn't do any more harm, still being in the project pro forma.
A suddle but visible slap without mobbing him any more. In addition to that the workers thought that they got rid of him.
(They really made his life hell. But srsly, he wrote down everyone who came in late by 5 minutes?! In motherfucking RUSSIA?! Giving shit to everybody who was not in the designated working suite, or coming drunk to work or who worked to slow...yeah, he really did that. Its a special form of being stupid..but its being stupid nonetheless! Usually a projectmanager has his office an hour drive from the construction side, visiting once for 10minutes. He wanted to place his on the side..and thats where he got it. A bit over motivated, as I already said)
So after I established some piece i started to search for an alternative..without success. I was in godmode, so before I
ended up with stress myself i decided for the concrete to be removed. So the Vitalis got started, the share of sand in the concrete was so high that some parts where removed like sand stone. I sat in my container browsing reddit, when Boris stormed in: "CUKA BLYAT! A CORPSE IN THE CONCRETE!"
Around 3 hours later we had a couple of frustrated policemen on the side, from which I really dared to expect to check out a corpse at the end of the world..In the end my workers, who thought the day already finished thanks to the unexpected guest and had killed my ratio(1 bottle of vodka/day/per person) had to dig him out.
Nobody knew the guy, who was wearing a first class smoking. The policemen became really uneasy when it became obvious, that the guy had a big hole in the back of his head and an even bigger hole where his nose was supposed to be. We suspected a projectile.. Three of the five policemen were suddenly of the opinion that everything was in perfect order and left with squeaking tires. The somewhat more duty oriented Vladimir called a couple of his colleges, who looked a bit gloomy to wrap the guy up. All with the advice "Mafia, better no ask questions! Just finish your constructions!"/
What happened?
As known from the accurate hollywood material, the local Mafia got rid of some unwanted guy by putting him into concrete on our known construction side..that's what really happened.
Somehow the gang knew, that a fundament was supposed to be placed there. I suspect until today, that they financially support someone in the building departement or visit his family with a gun..Weird was, that we were literally nowhere; Archangelsk can in no way be called the centre of the universe. I really got restless. Boris armed himself up to his teeth (i really dont know where he got all those weapons from). And, what really funny is, that we wouldn't have noticed anything, if those guys didn't fuck up the concrete.
I wrote a short report to the steering committee and suggested to put a Russian projectmanager to work, who
knows about the customs and traditions on a local cons truction side. The german manager was asked to do some vert important work in some archive. And that was it for me.
