Brushstrokes, Image and Color in Sin Café

“Life is a huge canvas, throw all the paint you can.” Danny Kaye

It is a pleasure to do that, look at the children when they mix colors, artitsts with their brushes, remember how you felt when you added that new color to your outfit. Playing with colors is a habit taken since our childhood, and for me it has become part of my profession. Hello guys, I'm Afrika, idea developer and today I'm going to show you part of my recent work.

At the beginning of the year I received an invitation to be part of a production team to record a music video as an image consultant, I was very surprised and glad, but beyond the emotion I knew that it was a different challenge, next to new people, it would be a all different experience than I was doing. Once the invitation was accepted, I received the song to work, "Sin Café", after listening to it, studying it, even drawing it mentally, we had the team meeting where I could listen to them and better interpret their idea which fit in the previous analysis work I had done.

"Sin Café" is the title of a song by Indeleble, a band born in the city of Cumaná-Venezuela and its style is influenced by many genres such as: jazz, reggae, Hard Rock, blues and composed by:
  • Guitar: Miguel Guerra
  • Battery: José Lara
  • Percussion: Anthony Enriquez
  • Bass Guitar: César Ramos
  • Voice: Kimberly Morán P
  • Music Keyboards: Nilson Leiva

The lyrics and melody of "Sin Café" show us the transition from a heartbreaking towards improvement, it is not sad in its entirety, and visually that was important to reflect . For being the first single in video clip, it was also necessary to highlight the seal of the band and personality of its members, without forgetting the locations chosen for filming.

The colors are the reflection of the light absorbed by a body, thanks to that the materials to dye, paint, decorate and represent emotions have come; there is also the psychology of color, therapies and colorimetry. The colors are subjective, it is our perception which give meaning and sense.

Taking all that into account, my proposal was to work according to a warm color palette where cold tones are applied in details, making the necessary contrast to convey what was agreed. The members of the band were asked to wear those colors in their dress, without any form requirement, because the intention was the comfort for them; maintaining a fresh countenance, taking care of styling details promoting a well executed simplicity, added to the props of space and together generate a representative visual balance of the lyrics combined with the melody.

All this is achieved thanks to a professional team, people with the common goal of doing a good job:
  • Video produced by: Indelible.
  • Creative Direction: Héctor Granado @Hectgranate.
  • Director of Photography: Héctor Granado.
  • General Production: Indeleble and Niurka Lara.
  • Art Direction: Andy Nuñez @teatrotempestad, Yuli Lemus @yulilemus.
  • Image consultant: Afrika Leslie. This is me :)
  • Cameras: Carlos Arenas, Héctor Granado.
  • Editing and assembly: Héctor Granado.
  • Making of / Photo: Antonio Maza, Joselys Rodríguez.
  • Logistics: Nancy Vásquez, Ana Fuentes.
  • Sound: Lenin Márquez.

People to whom I am grateful for their commitment and respect throughout the process to obtain this work, which not only met me with incredible professionals, but also demonstrates the importance of study, organization and daring to execute ideas. In addition, the importance of each detail, such as colors and light management for projection according to the intention.

Now, I invite you to see the video clip (it is at the end of the article), enjoy it and share it with your impressions. I also invite you to experiment with your talent, take it to the next level and ask for help needed to develop the idea that you would like to materialize.

Thank you for reading me and may the color always be with you.
