Life and works of Geoffrey Chaucer:part 1
Today I am writing about the life and works of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer. He was born in 1340 in London,England . He became a public servant in 1357 and continued in that capacity throughout his lifetime with the British court. His most popular, acclaimed and best known work is The Canterbury Tales . He died On october 25 ,1400 in London,England. He was the first to be buried in Westminster Abbey’s poet’s corner.
HIs early life
He was born most likely at his parent’s house on Thames street in London,England. His family descended from an affluent family who made their money in London trade of wine. Some sources say that John who was Chaucer’s father carried on the family wine business .
It is believed that Geoffrey Chaucer attended the St. Paul’s Cathedral School. . In that place Chaucer for the first time became acquainted Virgil and Ovid’s influential writings.
After becoming the public servant to countess Elizabeth of Ulster who was the duke of clarence’s wife. . For this he was paid a small stipend. And at that time this small stipend was enough to pay for his food and clothing. In the year 1359 was involved in a fight in the Hundred years’ year in France . He was captured for ransom at Rethel.
It was fortunate for him that he was connected to royal ones. King EDward (III) helped him to pay his ransom .
After Chaucer’s release he then joined the Royal service . he travelled throughout France ,Italy and Spain.. It was all about diplomatic missions. He travelled throughout the early to mid 1360s. He was agrat man who served well enough. And for his service King Edward grated Chaucer a pension of 20 marks.
In the year of 1366 Chaucer married Philippa Roet who was the daughter of Sir Payne Roet. In near future the marriage helped Chaucer to build further career in the English court.
