Drop by Drop

It was a deserted island with nothing but sand and sticks scattered all over. Surrounded by sea, the island was on its own. She walked around, unaware of her surroundings. After an hour of walking the island, she felt tired. She walked around for another hour, now she was exhausted! On a soft pile of sand she lay down and closed her eyes, she woke up with a hand grabbing her throat! Not only was the hand as painful as a dagger, but it was as dry as desert sand. Soaking up all the moisture in her like a sponge. She screamed, no sound came out but a soft croaking. She fought back, but her limbs were as heavy as lead. Her eyes flew open and she realized she was still alone, but she was in pain. The invisible hand was still rapped around her throat. She swallowed hard and it felt as if her throat was lined with barbed wire..

Never had she felt excruciating pain such as this, all her life she had always had water just a knob turn away. But now she was deprived of it. Even though she was surrounded by what she needed most, it cursed her. She slowly stood up and wearily looked around, the island looked different, it was drier. Tears flooded her eyes, but as fast as the water left her eye, it dried. She stopped crying…

Looking around she was hit with a thought that terrified her, it terrified her so much that she almost screamed when it entered her mind. Surely she hadn’t thought of it, she wouldn’t think of such a horrible thing. But then she realized she was right, she wasn’t herself. Desperation had gotten into her head, instead of being desperate to live, she was desperate to get rid of the pain. All of a sudden the sand didn’t look so bad anymore, the sea water was more inviting to drink. She ran to the sea and drank the water, she knew it would kill her; and that’s what she wanted. After her stomach could not take anymore liquid, she lay down in the sand. She lay there for days as the wind slowly covered her in a blanket of sand. After the third day, darkness clouded her mind and everything was gone.

She woke up in her bed, and ran to the kitchen to drink water. She was not in pain, but she was thirsty. The dream was still vivid in her mind. She felt the water wash down her throat, and she felt fresh. Never again would she abuse water…
