A simple but powerful lesson: Don't split pennies.

in #log6 years ago (edited)

One of the conversations that eventually happens with anyone I have ever mentored is the useless idea of splitting pennies. The expression is meant to explain how at times we spend too much time and effort attempting to save on things that make very little sense.

Because I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to dismiss the importance of being smart with your money, I'm going to attempt to describe this in the simplest way possible. But before doing so, let me lay some groundwork for my point.

The mistake we make when we are splitting pennies, at least in my opinions, is the one were we stop placing enough value to our time spent. What I mean by this, is that in everything we do, every work we put towards a task is not only measured in outcome and results, but also in the time it took for us to complete it.

You could say that time is subjective, and that argument is semi valid. But the idea behind optimizing our time, our efforts, comes with the correct management of our finite resource, our time. As we know, there is absolutely no way that you could get a refund for any time you have ever wasted, as a time machine is still not in production, and even then it's still not the same thing at all.

If we value our time, then we must be able to decide between the things we are doing, the things we need to do, and the things we must learn to either ignore or delegate. Once we learn this balance, we become more effective at our jobs, and more productive in life in general.

To give a concrete example: If a lawyer makes two hundred dollars and hour, but he chooses to not work today because he needs to clean his car. If the thought process behind that is saving the $40 dollars from the car wash place, he effectively lost $160 dollars.

I grant you that life is not full with such clear examples, and some of them require a little more analyzing. But in many ways many of us fall for the same mistakes.

In my view all transactions, whether commercial or not need to be thought from that perspective. Understanding that someone who values his time, values it enough to be aware of this little predicaments. If we learn to value our time, to put effort and energy in our strengths and not our weaknesses, we will find a new source of abundance, and even more importantly a Happier life.

Wishing you all a beautiful week

it is just determining what to priority first basing on the most important thing as a reference. If we consider income as our reference then we do first the thing where we earn more but this is directly opposite if we choose another reference to consider.

Time management is more important if you want to succeed in your life.

The best time management is put a upvote in my reply for don't be a wasted time doing it, i'm right? XD

Hi @chbartist ..... Nice your blog is very hot and your steemit rank is 71 after 6 month good job. I like you... Thank
@Vikashvgm

Well, he put in a lot of money and a little effort.. So from that perspective it is a good job in terms of ROI... In using the platform as it is intended to be used is a less good job...

wow, So from that perspective it is a good job in terms of

ROI ,Return On Investment :)

You are right, this is more about investing money than post quality.
Wonder why so many people are in awe about that.

They are just happy to lick ass, this is how steem works.

Yes unfortunately it works that way. The bad thing about it is not that people make money the wrong way, but that people who were here to play by the rules get frustrated by seeing not much reward to their posts and a lot of rewards to useless posts, and then leave the platform.

True, I'm one of them and investing in STEEM is officially my worst mistake so far. I wish I could quickly withdraw my funds, but they are fucking trapped.

I am conflicted about that one too. I have not invested any fiat in Steem, just free faucet coins and rewards from posts. That is not the fastest way to let your account grow, but it feels like I can walk away whenever I want without really losing anything. But what to do with my SBD, turn it into SP and by doing that lock it, or just keep the SBD for who knows when and what. It is not a large amount yet, but it is growing.

Isn't it possible to "power down" SP back into SBD? I just started out and have been converting everything to SP cause powering up sounds cool but I will stop if it decreases liquidity. Also wouldn't it be possible to send your SBD to an exchange, sell it, and transfer the funds to cold storage or fiat? As opposed to just keeping it for who knows what? Sorry if these are dumb questions, have a nice day!

i am new in this platform, sir may i know how we invest in this platform and earn more.please reply

You can take a look at the transaction of every user by looking at their wallet. You will see they send huge amounts to several upvote bots. The bots will upvote for even more.
This is mostly done by people who can't make a decent post, but want to earn some money.
It is not what the platform was created for, but it does leave room to use it that way.

On the flip side people seem to not worry enough about saving money on big things like houses and cars. Americans waste a lot of money buying or leasing new cars every few years.

Well, I must agree though I think buying cars is not a bad thing. We just have to make sure money is well managed before buying a car :)

Buying certain cars can be a great investment. I dunno about a $100,000 luxury car that loses half it's value in 4 years though. lol

Yes, you are right. Many times we focus on the urgent and leave aside the important, thus wasting all our resources on less productive things. In my blog I also have some post about self help, but for the Spanish speaking community. From today I follow you and I will be more aware of your publications. Bye

There a time determianado for each of our actions, but if we use the time for whatever, regardless or give the value it deserves, we will be planting seeds that will not give good fruit in the future, and only those who manage to see the value of this , who manage to see the weaknesses that slow them down and steal the time, these that manage to see that way will be filled with a lot of prosperity in the soul, and in all the areas...

You are such a good mentor, ever positive and visionary...thanks @chbartist for sharing your strategies to us...

Boom. This is so true. I value my time and prioritize enjoying my free time over saving a few pennies on a small deal.

Time is everything.. If one doesn't kno how to use his or her time at the end of it all we achieve nothing.time is precious and very important. Thanks for the great motivation @chbartist

Time is like everything indeed in this world. I wonder what will be this world look like if there's no time at all?

If we value our time, then we must be able to decide between the things we are doing, the things we need to do, and the things we must learn to either ignore or delegate. Once we learn this balance, we become more effective at our jobs, and more productive in life in general.

great work
