Logic Vs Emotions
There are two forces within us that are in a struggle against each other. Unfortunately, they are both necessary for us to live a happy and fulfilled life. Therefore, we should try to never indulge too deeply in one or the other. They are both constant forces and cannot be destroyed. However, at times, they do try to eclipse the other. We must gain a mastery over them so that we can utilize them instead of being controlled by them.
These two forces are logic and emotion.
Logic is the force that urges us to think things through, to make sense of the world. It is much like a trusted adviser, always attempting to guide us to the most beneficial thoughts and actions. It tells us how things should be, how they should work, and why. We all have logic and it is the same in everyone. However, what one person sees as logical, another may deem crazy. This is because logic is limited by knowledge and knowledge differs from person to person.
Emotion is the second force. Like logic, emotion is the same in everyone. This is what allows us to empathize with each other which is critical to growth and interaction as a society. Then why is it that people feel differently about a particular subject? Again, it is because of knowledge or rather, the lack of it. Knowledge determines which emotions are triggered.
Emotion is the force that drives us to action. The problem with this is that emotion is only concerned with the now. It has no forethought because it has no thought. It is simply a force whose purpose is to be expressed.
Logic on the other hand, drives us to thought. It cannot manifest as action. This is the reason why the majority of people are the way they are. We are, by nature, emotion heavy creatures. We can all go about our daily lives fueled mostly by emotion and the vast majority do not take the time to cultivate the force of logic.
By increasing our time in thought, we can activate and grow the force of logic within us. Too much time spent in thought, however, will lead us to be logic heavy which will in turn reduce our action. When we can tame these forces, we gain a mastery over them and ascend humanity.
