The fear of God in the Bible: To refrain from evil pleases the Lord, and to avoid injustice is atonement. Ben Sira 35:3

Avoiding evil is a necessity to get closer to God, the sapiential books in the Bible, like Ben Sira, Proverbs or Wisdom, teach men with their eternal and invisible wisdom, and whoever does not do this is carried away by concupiscence and thus begins on the path of error and suffering, because appearances and the needs of the moment deceive reason. The wisdom of the Lord, beyond any human weakness, always seeks the truth and thus avoid the destructive unforeseen events (stumbling rocks) that appear after the "merely rational" or prudent decisions.
While turning away from evil is not strictly the good or the righteousness, it is a first step toward starting on the correct path of life, the path of beatitude. Concupiscence, the inclination of the human heart to error, is a great weight on man's reason and whoever frees himself from it attains true freedom and happiness. That is why gradually moving away from evil is so necessary for the soul of man, something that the divine master Jesus constantly taught in the gospels when he spoke of the slavery of sin. This is why, for example, in the book of Job, in one of its dialogues, something very important is stated: "And he said to the human race, ´The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.´" Job 28:28.
Avoiding evil can be identified in the science of ethics with the Silver Rule: "Do to no one what you yourself hate" Tobit 4:15. This rule is constantly present in the Bible and is closely associated with the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity). And whoever follows this rule, the Bible teaches men, beyond any personal sacrifice, such as fasting, is taken into account by God. This is why Ben Sira in his book taught with wisdom the true spiritual path for man: "To refrain from evil pleases the Lord, and to avoid injustice is atonement" Ben Sira 35:3. The sapiential books teach with simple phrases the spiritual principles that men must not forget in order to live sensibly, because madness is just around the corner to catch the foolish and the ignorant.
