Let's crack some packs!
Here we go, the first of hopefully many pack cracking posts!
For this entry we're doing a grab bag of packs you can find at target. The packs I picked are below.
Kaladesh, Eldritch Moon, and Magic: Origins came from a three-pack with Bristling Hydra, while the others were purchased individually. I did not know what packs would come with the Bristling Hydra, but I'm pleasantly surprised as I need cards from Kaladesh and Origins, so hopefully we get some good pulls! Lord knows I need it after the Modern Masters 2017 box I opened yesterday (which will be detailed in a future post).
Let's start with Eldritch Moon.
Coax from the Blind Eternities as our rare. Valued at a dime its not the best start, but we have 8 more to go!)
Next up is Magic: Origins - here's hoping we get a planeswalker!
Hangarback Walker isn't the worst rare, but not especially what I was looking for, since I already own one. Almost made our money back with the pack though.
And finally, to round out the three-pack, we'll crack Kaladesh. Will we get a masterpiece?!
Nope! I don't need a madcap experiment, nor do I want one, so let's move on shall we?
The first of Amonkhet.
Situational at best, Shadow of the Grave is not what I'm looking for. Unlike Coax from the Blind Eternities though, it is worth a whooping TWO dimes.
Next Amonkhet.
Insult//Injury is a cool card that did work for me at pre-release, but do I really need another. I guess so...
5 packs in out of 9 and it's not looking great. Here's hoping Rivals of Ixalan has some value, or at least some cards I need for my Treasure EDH deck.
Deeproot Elite isn't bad by any stretch, and assuming merfolk see play in Standard post-bans, this may retain its $4-$5 value. Not a terrible pull by any means.
On to the next Rivals pack.
Radiant Destiny as the rare. Meh. That pretty much sums it up. Like the treasure token though.
Two more Rivals to go.
I really wasn't looking for a Captain's Hook, and I don't think anyone running equipment decks is either. This is the least valuable rare pulled so far, at NINE cents.
There's still plenty I need from Rivals, but I will I get any of those cards in my final pack? Let's find out...
Boom! Rekindling Phoenix! The first card of any true value, this one is sitting at a pretty $15.25 mid on tcgplayer. I don't think I will use it, but lord knows I need the trade fodder.
Let's take a look at our rares, all together.
Our "good" pulls are Hangarback Walker, Deeproot Elite, and Rekindling Phoenix. To be honest, not especially spectacular, but it could have been a lot worse.
Adding up the rares, including Bristling Hydra, and it looks like I lost around 8 bucks overall. Not bad, but hopefully next time will be a bit better.
What did you think of the pulls? Did I grab anything you're looking for or like, or did I just pull straight jank? Let me know what you think in the comments, and be sure to follow me for more pack openings in the future!
