Can we ever abrogate ‘male chauvinism’ ?
Our politicians before winning the ‘seat’ promises gender equality but remains reluctant to promote the same.’ Equality ‘ in India is just for namesake. Male dominance is deeply rooted in Indian culture. You can breathe the menace of skewed sex ratio in this country. A girl is worshiped as a Devi on one hand and denied her existence on the other. One of the reasons for the growth of population in India is the desire for a son. There is always an impression in every Indian’s mind, accept it or not, that after getting engaged, the daughter of the family, better known as the burden of the father, is passed on to the husband for a very high price.
Today, majority of married women are financially dependent on their spouse. ‘Men are bread winners’ – have only added fuel to this fire in which the female gets burnt. It’s ironical how Indians can walk kilometers to worship Goddesses but miserably fail to respect woman living next door. Male society fails to understand that a ‘woman’ gave them birth, a ‘woman’ raised them and that the same ‘woman’ is a daughter, wife and a mother. When they can’t hear a word against their mothers , how hard it is to understand that their wives, sisters ,daughters and colleague deserve the same respect? It reflects their ‘fear’. Fear of being answered back, fear of being disrespected, fear of being inferior, fear of being beaten up the same way they beat their wives, fear of restricted freedom and an obvious fear of being assaulted.
YES, every woman has a spark,an ambition to stand independent amidst the male chauvinist crowd. But what’s holding them back? It’s our society , wrenching them back ,proving the made up notion that a woman doesn’t have what it takes but a man does’. “In a civilized society, male chauvinism has no room.
The Constitution of India confers the affirmative rights on women and the said rights are perceptible from Article 15. When the right is conferred under the Constitution, it has to be understood that there is no condescension” these were the words of supreme court when a bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra asked why women in this country cannot be allowed to live in peace and lead a dignified life with freedom.
One more thing we should take a note on, Women have contributed to the education and socialization of generations and generations of men, inadvertently perpetuating male chauvinism in the messages, values and attitudes they passed down to their children. Even today they contribute to the same male chauvinism that affects them so much and about which they constantly complain.
When you look for protection you assume that because you are a woman you are weak and because he is a man he is strong. You put both sexes in an unfair situation that is not really “natural” for either one. It’s just a male chauvinist stereotype you learned very early on. Saying things such as, “Who knows who she slept with to get there.” Every time you discount another woman’s ability to get to the position she’s in, you’re perpetuating male chauvinism by reinforcing the idea that only men reach powerful positions through merit whereas women can only get promoted by using sex.
I wonder or rather we all should wonder how different the world would have been if few males used their manpower more for earning a living than for giving unwanted scars to their partner. Though we can’t deny the fact that this chauvinism has mellowed down but we are far away from the point when they’ll be no room for male chauvinism in our society.
