RE: South Florida Mangoes

in #mango6 years ago

Very interesting, how many trees do you have? We have Mangos growing in Australia's tropical north but they are a bit pricey here. I do indulge myself towards the end of the growing season when they get a bit cheaper. They would be up there as one of my favourite fruits with Bananas at the top, mainly because they are cheaper than Mangoes, cheers.

Sort:

Mangoes have been nearly a religion in South Florida for years, generations even. In the Homestead/Redlands farming belt they say: "Growing Limes is a business, Avocados is a rich man's hobby but Mangoes are a religion." It's because people grow them regardless of whether it pays or not. Even within the city limits there are self-service Mango Stands where you take what you want and leave your donation in a jar. They can be pricey but as the season peaks, with so many backyard growers, there is great abundance too.

We have the unique advantage of pioneer plant explorers going all over the world and collecting all the best from the tropical belt and growing them here. They have been grafted, hybridized and cross-pollinated and the history, genetics and brand identification carefully tracked. So much so that there are more than 250 varieties that appear in our multiple Mango Festivals every summer.

The Rare Fruit Council, Now RFCI (International) started here and the Aussie branch has been wildly successful too. So anyway...
