Welcome to the Meta…Verse
Facebook took by surprise the whole world, by announcing their new name…
META …(Ancient Greek word meaning “beyond” “after” “changed”, “different”, “higher” “beyond;” “in the midst of” in common with” ‘by means of” “between” “in pursuit or quest of”, “next after”, “behind”.)
Here you can see everything that Zuckenburg revealed on his key note, announcing the rebranding of Facebook.
So what is MetaVerse, and why Facebook is betting so much on it?
“In this future, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up,” Zuckerberg wrote in a letter announcing Facebook’s rebranding as Meta.
You can even choose to be your own Avatar, that you own as an #NFT
The covid 19 and the lockdown has accelerate the growth of work from home. People realized that they can work as efficiently from their homes, as from their office, and they are also saving a lot of time and money on transportation. (In the metaverse you will be able to teleport from one place to another)
I’m sure most of you can see the need for work from home, and the need to be able to work in a better work environment, from the comfort of your home. It will be even possible to have an eye contact with your coworkers.
So, what else did Zuckenburg announced. Let’s talk about one of my favourite industry.
The sport industry in the metaverse.
Fitness in the metaverse:
Fitness in VR has been in development for years. Some big players are trying to get involved since they realized that sports and VR will be exploding in the future.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes Peloton-like fitness subscriptions could become an essential part of the virtual reality experience.
“Think about it like Peloton, where you have a subscription, but instead the device is VR and you’re doing a boxing class or a dance class.”
From this statement we can see how cryptocurrencies will be used as micro payments in the metaverse. Will that change the existing advertising model that most of the big tech companies are depending on.
But is it only about fitness? How about sport streaming? Training? How can the metaverse improve the athlete’s performance or the experience that we have as audience of our favourite sports (Football(Soccer), American Football, Tennis).
Let’s have a look at some examples.
Coaches will be able to visually demonstrate their tactics, athletes will have visual data of their performance, and audience will be able to have a full immersive experience of their favourite sport and athletes.
How about having a first raw seat in an NBA game of your favourite team? Teams can monetize and sell first row seats of their games, to as many users as they want, or even have different price range for different seats.
Another interesting topic that Zuckenburg mention in his keynote, is the ability to recreate a specific moment in time, for educational or recreational reasons.
Imagine been able to visit the market in Ancient Rome, and interact with the people, or have the whole solar system in the tips of your fingers. How about a highlight from your favourite team?
So what are my views about the whole Meta(Face)Book rebranding.
I’m really excited to see big tech companies entering the world of metaverse, but I’m worried about the centralization of the metaverse.
Will Metabook take over all our data once again? Will the Twitter-verse, the Punks, Apes, MetaHeros, Veefriends and all the innovators of the space prevent this hostile take over? I believe the two world will co-exist, but the real metaverse that will be created by the real innovators would be what we should be looking for…
If you have no idea what I’m talking about in the last paragraph..stay tuned for my next post about Twitter-Verse, Punks, Apes and MetaHeros.
