MeerKAT RADIO TELESCOPE

South Africa has unveiled MeerKAT - a super radio telescope ,a first phase of what will be the world’s largest telescope in a project to try to unravel secrets of the universe

Location is the MeerKAT - South Africa Karoo desert

The telescope was inaugurated in the South African town of Carnarvon.

The world largest radio telescope until 2024.

MeerKAT will be incorporated into the complex Square Kilometre Array (SKA) instrument, which when fully operational in late 2020s would’s biggest and most powerful radio telescope.

MeerKAT is a part of Square Kilometre Array project.

CO-HOSTING

Both South Africa’s Karoo region and Western Australia’s Murchison Shire were chosen as co-hosting locations for many scientific and technical reason , from the atmospherics above the desert sites, through to the radio quietness , which comes from being some of the most remote location on Earth.

South Africa’s karoo desert will host the core of the high mid frequency dishes, ultimately extending over the African continent .Australia’s Murchison Shire will host the low frequency antennas.

Project cost 2 billion dollars.
