The death of organic reach
Every Brand story begins by creating a brand that has loyalists that can swear by the brand. Harley had the Harley owners group and apple had its subscribers. Then we moved to social media like twitter and facebook, where brand pages had subscribers and brands hoped that once you've spent enough to get a following of loyalists, you could then engage them with organic content. This would help brands taper off their spends once the awareness creation task is done.
Facebook has made it impossible to easily reach your followers organically. Research has shown that even a Facebook page with 500K+ likes could have a very low organic reach to the tune of 2%. This spells doomsday for brands which count on organic reach for their engagement. Facebook reports that there is too much content to be published on the platform and so they choss to put or not put the message in front of the fans. If you boost the post though, it will publish this to the targeted fans and get you better engagement.
This is a smart way in which Facebook looks at monetizing their platform and also in a way cheat brands who have already spent a huge sum to create a Fan Base.
So what is the solution. There needs to be a solution that enables reach basis consumption patterns of target groups for every brand and should rewards brands as well as consumers for consuming content that is relevant.
