Microsoft Mixed Reality Headset-Hands On!

First of all, they call it a mixed reality device but I found nothing interesting as mixed reality. It is more like a Virtual Reality device based on the windows platform.

Last week I got a Microsoft mixed reality device to work with. I am writing a short review how I feel about the device.

When I first plug in the device it starts a Mixed Reality Portal automatically after few mins. It checks the hardware requirements and let me start the home. The Mixed reality Home is a place ( Cliff House ) where I can customize all the windows application like my desktop. I can visit different rooms and use my applications. I can rescale and reposition the windows in the VR Space.

Here I was visiting my LinkedIn profile with the browser in VR Space.

The controller is awesome, It has joysticks, trackpad, and fire button. Another option button. It connects to the computer with Bluetooth. I can teleport with the trackpad in the VR space.

It works without any addition sensor ??
Yes, Unlike the HTC vive it works without any hooked up sensor station. For the controller, the headset has 2 cameras to track the controller with the led.

Three main difference between HTC vive and Microsoft Mixed Reality Device :

1. Microsoft Mixed reality device doesn't need the base station ( sensors ) and other tracking device like HTC vive.

2. The Controller is tracked with the optical method, Not with the sensor like HTC vive.

3. They called it mixed reality but I didn’t see any AR application for the device, Mostly VR Applications.

Bonus: Microsoft Mixed Reality Headset seems easy to use with joystick controller and trackpad. Also easy setup. But we will miss the Steam Store.

I am trying to develop some application with the device. I didn't see any augmented reality experience with the device yet, trying to understand why they call it Mixed Reality Headset.
