Choose a Day and Take a Break from the Internet… the Result Will Amaze You!

in #mindset6 years ago

Hello, dear Steemians!

The one word that would properly define the post-modern human society is ‘drenched.’

We are drenched with storms and floods of an interconnected world in which sharing has lost its true value.

Most of the young population nowadays suffer from identity crisis, because they do not know who they are and what they want from life.

The reason for this is out our society is drenched. Our daily hours are preoccupied by the many distractions of the postmodern world that require our attention and focus.

Namely, the internet has been the main source of distraction for a long time now.

There is one story that has always baffled me. The famous and acclaimed director, Christopher Nolan, once stated in an interview that he doesn’t own a cellphone and has never used email before.

When explaining why, he simply said:
‘I actually really like not having one because it gives me time to think. You know, when you have a smartphone and you have 10 minutes to spare, you go on it and you start looking at stuff.’

That is a powerful statement. And it actually makes you think!

In these days, we are never truly bored. We never truly think. We do not have a window which we could dedicate to our thoughts, because every moment of our day is committed to a little piece of digital screen.

image3.jpg
img src

We have, slowly but surely, become slaves of this little digital screen. Every time we start to think about important things about our life or hurtful things that require our attention, our smartphone begs us to hold it up and check our social media profiles.

It is a convenient distraction. One that keeps you from making progress in your life!

But extraordinary and interesting things happen when we allow ourselves to be bored. Because then we will go and search for something interesting to do. We may even try to do something that has been on our mind for a very long time.

Something that could help us, but we never found the ‘right’ time for it.

image4.jpg
img src

Our minds are overloaded and preoccupied. How many people do you think our ancestors had to deal with back in the day before technology took over?

There is so much information and distraction to be processed by our mind that could send the minds of our ancestors into a frenzy and drive them mad.

These smartphones are produced in a way to sell. They are, in their nature, addictive and give you attachment issues.

Social media platforms are designed in a way to keep the user from leaving them. And that is how they make money off you!

image1.jpg
img src

Take a look at your surroundings. All of those chats, emails, posts, stories, pictures, news feeds etc. can wait. There are people close to you that require your love and attention. There are people who actually need you.

You have thoughts that you need to think about. For so long you have been a slave of these platforms without knowing it, slowly losing your thought independence and becoming reliant on them for your identity.

Despite all those chats and conversations, the only person you are never talking to is you!

How much time do you dedicate to yourself, and your own state of mental health?

How much time do you dedicate to take care of your thoughts and feelings?

Not much. Because the internet and social media inadequately take care of that for us.

image2.jpg
img src

If you are not strong enough to break the chains that are binding you to the collective ignorance of the human race, then at least give yourself a chance to take a break from the floods.

Choose a day of the week, any day, and decide to not go over to the internet or social media. Dedicate that day to yourself and the people who are close to you.

The results will amaze you. There are many things that happen to us every day, and many things around us that we take for granted.

Decide to see life with your own eyes, and not through a small digital screen that tells you what you need to hear.

A BIG HUG!

That is a great reminder; one we should schedule frequently.
I have disconnected from the internet several times for different reasons (traveling, sickness, blackouts) and it is certainly a relief not to have to oversaturate your brain with so much information, most of which is a waste of time and energy.
My eyes are the ones that thank me the most for the breaks. There are days, when I've been working over the clock on the computer, that I feel dizzy and as if I had a load on my nape.

My family also thanks me for the disconnection, although they are also addicted to their favorite tech thing. Technology has definitely transformed the form we interact and bears a big share of responisbility for our inability to communicate meaningfully and share quality time with our loved ones.

Of course, we can always choose, and choosing to disconnect from the internet o whatsapp is the best decision we can make once in a while.
Doing it for good would be ideal but some of us owe our livelihood to the net, so until options are found, it will have to be only occasional.

This thought you shared is amazing. I've been there and I actually saw the difference. The internet is a big surge of distraction and has so created a new lifestyle for many and it becomes a problem for them to fit in to their mother culture.

In my part of the world, the use of the internet has made many students to become weird, insulting, non-participatory in real-life and quick-to-learn vices. It becomes very worrisome where the time spent on the internet has no reward than making new friends, short smiles at comics scenes and such.

It's therefore pertinent, we could live a real life out of the internet atimes.

Great thoughts @Chbartist

Excellent review @chbartist and you are absolutely right, in our time of high technologies and the Internet, we are too attached to all this and sometimes we don’t notice how real life goes, which of course has a detrimental effect on us, so we all just need to sometimes break away from this and arrange a day off!

Really, it is a very important recommendation. It is necessary to choose a day and to take a break from the Internet for our mental health.

The Internet accelerates our brain activity with decadiated information but decreases or annul our social activity, very necessary for our emotional stability. It is very important to maintain physical contact with others, mainly with our loved ones and friends. We raise the joy of looking at the eyes, shaking hands, embrace, kiss ... Do not hope that a device replaces human heat. A big hug to you.

You have written very well. Apart from the Internet, there is much more to see in the world to understand that once before our mobile was spoiled, the net was not run for 1 week.

This is so true. Anytime I go on vacation I put my cell phone away and remain disconnected from the internet for the entire trip. It feels so good to be in the moment and to not waste time staring at a screen. I worry about children growing up on screens these days and never really developing an imagination or learning to make their own fun. Phones offer instant gratification and a surge of dopamine in the brain. I wonder what the effect that will have on them as they get older?

This is a thought-provoking message.
Too much of everything is poison. Many people have lost valuable possessions because of the fact that they stay glued to social media. Even I am guilty and truly it steals time. It prevents one from tending to more important matters and most times even after spending much time on social media, there's nothing to gain.
My simple advice is this - fist of all, be moderate about everything, set your priorities straight and know everything that matters to you and are worth your time and thought. Spend some more time with family and friends, try visiting people - you don't know who feels forgotten out there and who you could stop from committing a suicide!!
Have a better purpose for going on social media other than trying to chat with too many friends who don't value you and your progress in life or check out the number of likes you got for a photo posted. Instead add value to what you do on social media, you could share ideas, advertise your products or services, inspire people by sharing good messages. This way you realize that you can still manage your time because everything you do now has a purpose. But of course, this requires self -discipline.
Set your priorities straight. And define rightly your purpose for doing things.
It may not be easy to back off social media completely because it has come to stay. But you can limit it's usage to your advantage and still live a well appreciated life.

We have all fall victim to this little digital screen. We are always online round the clock to the point of being overwhelmed with information and It has really eaten deep into the fabric of our subconscious mind. Too much of everything is bad they say. I think I really need to engage myself in this short vacation from my little digital screen. This post really talked to me, I can't lie. I implore everyone to do as @chbartist have suggested. Thanks @chbartist

Ohhh! @chbartist
Its just like an impossible think now to stay away from internet for a day even for a second. We gone to be very much addicted of it.
