Sans stopping outright, even a negligible slowdown would also be catastrophic in its impact on the biosphere. Given that any obstruction in the movement would uproot every single fixture and disrupt every mobile element of the earth, pacification of its current movement pattern would weather destructive storms, leaving the Earth literally un-liveable in a considerably short span of time.
