Whales to hold contests distributing STEEM & STEEMPOWER far & wide

... or that's what headlines might say if this were to happen.

Power and weath in the STEEM economy is highly concentrated at the top. X% of STEEMPOWER is held by X accounts. (TODO: find X)

Those with the greatest wealth and power, such as @dan and others, may be generally benevolent and intend to work for the benefit of STEEM, that may not always be the case.

And, it's rarely good when power and wealth is so highly concentrated. One consequence so far has been that the front page of steemit.com is basically an amalgamation of several whales' like-lists.

At the risk of sounding communist (which I am almost the opposite of), I think the largest STEEM/STEEMPOWER whales should redistribute most of their wealth and hold contests for things that would add value to the STEEM economy.

Contests could be for a wide variety of things such as

  • best original video post this week
  • most popular post in a trending category
  • lowest revenue per vote (to reward those with popular posts who may not be justly compensated)
  • most followers
  • most new followers this week
  • most mentions in other posts
  • or... or... or... any number of metrics could be used, the possibilities are endless.

Simple philanthropy like this could bring more attention to STEEM and provide additional incentives for original work and for participation, while bringing wider distribution of money and power among the masses. Why wouldn’t a philanthropic whale want that?

Win, win, win. :)

I like this idea. It would send a signal that original and popular contributions are valued by the creators, and it will hopefully encourage more people to spread the word.
