So are those bills worth much more than a dollar? Can you actually still claim the silver? I'd not heard about this before, but found this
Some old UK coins had some silver in them. I have some, but the value is only a few pennies. I think recently some coins are worth more as scrap metal than their face value.

There use to be a time when yes, these dollars use to be redeemable in silver at any bank in the United States. However Nixon removed the peg of the dollar to gold so that way they could print as many bills as they want without having to back it by anything.
oh and today that dollar is probably worth just a couple of dollars on ebay, for collector value more than anything else.
