Monkey Smallpox, 5 Things You Must Know About This Disease

in #monkey6 years ago

Monkey smallpox is being talked about by the public since it was officially discovered in Singapore. The Batam City Government responded to this finding by preparing a body temperature scanner, in an effort to anticipate the entry of this disease into Indonesia.

The Director General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) Anung Sugihantono advised the public not to worry about facing monkey pox. But the public still has to be vigilant especially if they want to go to Batam and Singapore.

"The important thing is to maintain cleanliness and health while traveling. For example, do not forget to wash your hands with soap. We do not apply special treatment except Batam which installs temperature detection devices," said Anung at detikHealth.

Here are 5 things that must be known about monkey pox.

  1. Not only from monkeys

The monkey was not the only animal carrying the virus that caused monkey smallpox. Based on WHO information, this disease can be spread by other primates such as rats and squirrels.

"For the sake of security, you should avoid contact with animals that can become viral vectors. Limiting contact is an effort to prevent the spread of monkey smallpox," said the infectious trophy specialist Dr. Adityo Susilo, SpPD-KPTI from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital ( FKUI-RSCM).

  1. Heal yourself

According to Dr. Adityo, monkey smallpox can heal itself. But it takes a long time for patients to recover from this disease. Patients also have to get enough fluids and nutrients and good care until they recover.

"It usually takes about 2-3 weeks for the patient to heal completely. During the illness the patient must receive supportive therapy such as adequate fluids, nutrition, and other body needs. Patients should not be a source of transmission for other healthy citizens," said Dr. Adityo.

  1. Do not have specific treatment

Monkey smallpox does not have a specific treatment. In addition to supportive therapy, the treatment given is also symptomatic according to the symptoms or complaints felt by the patient.

Besides not having specific treatment, monkey pox also does not have a vaccine as a precaution. According to Dr. Adityo, the vaccine for monkey pox has been rumored to be the same as that used for chicken pox. Monkey pox and chicken pox are both caused by the Variola virus.

  1. Never been in Indonesia

Monkey pox has never been found in Indonesia. That is, Indonesia has no experience dealing with this disease before. But with the nature of the disease that can heal itself, monkey pox infection does not need to cause concern.

Never before found it also does not indicate that Indonesia is completely safe from monkey smallpox infection. Anung again reminded the importance of prevention efforts against virus attacks.

  1. Can be prevented

Prevention efforts are actually more effective in dealing with various diseases than treatment. One of them is by washing hands with soap every time you start or end an activity. Anung also suggested contact restrictions for primates or material infected with the virus.

"A clean lifestyle must always be applied to avoid illness. In addition, if you experience a sudden fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and skin rashes less than 3 weeks after returning from traveling, you should immediately go to a health facility and tell your travel history," said Anung
