Hey space fans! 🌌

Ever looked up at the night sky and wondered why the moon looks different every night? One day it’s a sliver, and a few days later, it’s a big ol’ full moon. This is called the moon phases and it’s a cosmic show every month.

Why Moon Phases?

The moon doesn’t make its own light – it reflects sunlight. As it orbits the Earth, the angle between the Earth, moon and sun changes. That’s what determines how much of the moon’s surface we can see lit up.

Here’s the eight main moon phases in a nutshell:

New Moon: The moon is between the Earth and the sun so it’s completely dark from our view.

Waxing Crescent: A sliver of light appears as the moon moves out of the sun’s shadow.

First Quarter: Half the moon is visible – a half-moon.

Waxing Gibbous: More than half the moon is lit up – full moon.

Full Moon: The whole face of the moon is shining in the sky.

Waning Gibbous: The moon is losing light as it moves back towards the sun.

Last Quarter: Another half-moon but in reverse.

Waning Crescent: Just a sliver of light left before it goes dark again.

Fun Fact: The Moon’s Effect on Earth 🌊

Did you know the moon’s gravity causes the tides on Earth? The gravity creates high and low tides, a natural rhythm that’s been influencing human life for centuries. Some people even think the moon affects our moods and sleep patterns!
