Comparing Yourself To Others: Knowing Your Identity

in #motivation7 years ago

Hello Dtube & Steemit!

We as humans tend to compare ourselves to others and I think that it can be a detrimental habit. When you compare yourself to others there are a lot of issues that arise. Often times, this can be a bad because simply put, they are not you. It's even possible to lose your identity by comparing yourself with others. Especially, in the social media world.

I believe that by not comparing oursleves to others we can begin to feel confident, secure and knowing who you are in your own skin

Greetings, dear Lydia

Beautiful post. I think the comparison we make in relation to our person and the other is not something that part "alone" out of our heads. It is raised in our childhood, when we have a caregiver (usually a parent) who is in comparing to another person. Usually the mothers who do this. It's a way to manipulate the children. For example, the mother wants the child view certain clothes. She speaks like this: look, your friend is an excellent daughter, because she wears clothes that her mother is talking about ... See how a simple phrase can generate a bad belief in the child and then get her to take it to the adult world when I grow up? This type of child suffering these manipulations will have more self-esteem tends low and always be comparing yourself with others, finding that following the idea of the people, will be someone accepted. The base of it all is this belief: "if I is equal to people will be accepted by them". That disturbs a lot of someone's life, because she never will tend to achieve your full potential because it will always be following the herd.

Thank you for the lovely post.

I wanted your opinion on what I wrote.

Good morning!!!!

I agree, I was just thinking more about the social media aspect really though. Like what people see on social media and they like to try to compete or copy it but it's not necessarily what people need in their lives because it can be detrimental.

I love your consistent positivity Alpha! Great encouraging message :) keep up the quality content, I love it!

TY Mr. @goldmatters! I appreciate it. It's how I live my life being positive...some people don't get it or think its fake but I just think life is too short to be anything else... p.s. I love Mene!

YOU LOVE MENĒ!! When I read that I forgot everything else!

I can't seem to watch the video, but yes totally agree with this!! It's a slippery slope when you start comparing yourself to others... and so so easy to do! But I'm all for each owning our uniqueness and embracing who we are!

Ah bummer... Yes especially on social media its easy to find yourself getting caught in that trap. Hope to see you on dtube some day soon!

this is a general problem at DTube right now.
I'm having the same issue with other videos on DTube but can actually watch this one successfully.
try clearing your internet temporary files in your browser and try again.

the thing is: this is a competitive society.
even the goals we set for ourselves, thinking there are customized for ourselves are based on success/happiness models of others.
we see other are happy when they are rich and have financial freedom and conclude that we will probably be as happy as they are when we have roughly the same amount of money or freedom as they have.
in order the technically specify the reaching of our goals to happiness - we actually copy those specs from those people.
and thus, in a way, we are competing with them.
if we all were living in a cave with food nearby and our loving spouse in the nearest cave - we might be as happy as can be, but we don't.
we live in a society and we can't ignore others and we can't unconscionably comparing ourselves to them and to some extent competing with them.

You make a very good point. I agree. I think there are definitely things we can learn from people or others who have walked the path before us, or succeeded in something. But I also think comparing to others in a sense of like "I need to be like that" then your not really living out "your" life but trying to be someone else. This can be a very bad behavior because people lose their own identity through it.

Cool @alphasteem

Wonderful to see such a point of view, expecially from the female side which in my opinion are the 1st target to be trapped in this illusory world of social media :-)

Maybe that's why so many breaks/Families destroyed ;-) cause of the comparison of their own Life's with others out there which are not inside your skin/mind/soul :-)

Yeah I think your right about that it probably is mostly women but I think also the younger generation falls victim to it quite often with social media. Thanks for stopping by!
Lucian, are you Romanian?

I agree with you @alphasteem

I'm trying to understand if not the victimization comes from the ancestors ...

I've thought so too ... to ask where are you from. I've been following you between the first ones here on steemit. I'm from Sah'Arad :-) not the one from Israel ... the one from the Western side of Romania, Sah'Arad :-)

Regards and stay in touch and let's sustain/follow our blogs :-)

Hello Lydia! I got an error when trying to watch the video so I will just comment on what you wrote here. Very interesting, it definitely is human nature to want to compare ourselves to others, and then when we (in our own mind) don't think we measure up to those around us, it can get us down, frustrated, insecure, and even give up. For example, I started my YouTube channel back in later 2013. And I felt like a failure, no one was watching my videos, I was getting really negative comments from trolls, lol, but I had to decide am I making these videos for me or for them. At any rate I stuck with it, and glad I did, my channel has come so far. I learned to let the negative comments just roll off my back, and to think, hey even thumbs down, and negative comments still helps to boost my video in the rankings, lol. Also I have a very good friend that I grew up with, that has a YouTube channel, and I was always comparing mine to his. So bottom line, I completely agree with you, we shouldn't compare ourselves to others, live for us, be us, and let the chips fall. haha :)

Hey Mr Chef! Amazing comment I really appreciate you taking the time. I think you got the right attitude for sure. Thanks for the encouragement I just checked out your channel you are doing amazing! I will be following 😀 also! I just started youtube pretty much the same time as dtube but I only got like 70 subs there and obviously can't monetize anything there yet...I sometimes feel like giving up but I'm happy I found dtube and that really gives me a boost so I'm really thankful for it. As of right now I really don't have any negative comments but I'm sure they will come once you get bigger. And yeah nothing wrong with a little friendly competition here and there but comparing yourself to something else can be bad, especially if it's not you...Just because you think you want to be that, doesn't mean you are or ever will be you know.

Well thank you!! And no problem. If you need any tips for YouTube let me know! lol That is great that you started a channel there. Any time you can get more exposure out of your content is a huge win! Soon you will be monetized in no time!! :) A few little hints for Youtube that may help:

  1. Post at least once a week
  2. Tag, Tag, Tag (you need way more then 5 tags)
  3. Title, Description, Tags, Thumbnail, CC
Let me explain 3. So your title should be very clear what you are doing, no click bait. haha. Make sure the title is also repeated in some way in the first second or two of your description. Tagging, make sure your title is all one tag, then various forms of that as tags, then each individual word of that is a tag, then related content as tags. Make sure you make a custom thumbnail, and name it exactly the same as your title. Do manual close captioning, yes it is a good idea to sit down and write every word that you say, then name that file exactly the same as the title, then upload it. All of those things helps with SEO. Phew! lol that a quick crash course on YouTube.

Oh and what is your YouTube Channel? I will subscribe. :)

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSNTej67itW0-vMSkwg53ew?view_as=subscriber I really should link it in my steemit page, I don't know why I don't lol
If anything I post too much because steemit has the 7day period so I've been doing daily but I know thats probably not the best for YT. lol
Awesome tips! Really appreciate it, thanks so much! I will give it a shot I subbed to you on YT.

Subbed! Yes for Steemit! Daily seems to be the key right? haha YouTube I would start with 2 times a week. It will take more time for YouTube to catch up to Steemit. And you will earn a lot more from Steemit, until your YouTube Channel takes off. But hey, if you are already making the content for Steemit, why not post it on YouTube too! haha

Yeah exactly...thanks again so much for all the help! Appreciate the sub, hope I don't overwhelm you with videos hahaha...

You are welcome!! haha :)

Agreed its silly to compare to others

Yeah it is but sometimes its unavoidable lol.

Be your self and Fk the rest!

that works lol

@alphasteem you're pretty wise. Thanks for sharing that wisdom with total strangers. I can relate to everything you s aid. I think its even bad idea comparing other people with other people, because you might find that you end up condemning the one you favor least.

Thanks @kofibeatz I think its a reality now that many are faced with with the constant bombardment of social media...I hope steemit will be different in that aspect...so far I think it is from my experience. Thanks for watching & commenting!

Tis my pleasure..

Yes, it's so dangerous to compare and compete with others. Instead, just focus on your craft and always be working to be a better version of yourself. The rest falls into place. It's easy to use the words. To say them. Even to think them. But to actually put into practice, for some, can take a lifetime. Good video Alpha.

Yeah your right. Sometimes you gotta evaluate whats really important in your life and focus on that and trust in God all the way through it 😀
