LESSON ON LEADERSHIP AND POWER

Above all, every living thing is first a leader of his own chamber/kingdom (his or her life).

So the way you manage, value and lead yourself (personal leadership) is key to your public leadership. You don’t need to be the CEO in an organization. You can be a leader without being "the leader".

An effective leader is a role model to the people and the society.

A bossy leader is a pain to his people and the world at large.

The greatness of every leader is in having the ability to separate power and leadership. Every leader is powerful in his measure but not all can manage the two. Being power-drunk as a leader makes leadership a mess.

Understanding how to manage and separate the two is great wisdom. Mistakes are inevitable when a leader acts under power-drunk mindset. Even at home, when a husband wants to display power because he's the head of the family without having or considering some measure of love, he will regret his actions later.

Bossy leadership is death, loving leadership is life. Please, don't forget this in your business, marriage and every other institution you lead.

Here are some basic acts of a Loving Visionary Leader...

Show up and pay attention.

Wherever you are, be there. Be present, whether you’re there in person, over the phone or via other media. Give your attention to the person you’re with, the project you’re working on, the meeting you’re in- it is your gift to the situation.

You’ll foster confidence in yourself from others, grow their trust and be more engaged.

Listen so they’ll talk.

This means stop talking all the time.
Active listening skills take time and practice to develop properly but you can make a great start by learning not to interrupt.

Talk so they’ll listen. Be succinct, to the point and relevant.

Understand how your people like to communicate and ensure you can match their style as much as possible.

Understand your role.

Can you sum up what you do, and why you do it, in a sentence?

Being able to do this will make it easier for you to motivate yourself and communicate your worth to others.

Take responsibility.

Not only for all the decision that you make, (and the outcomes) but for finding solutions and answers to challenges that may involve your wider team.

How can you serve, not apportion blame?

Deliver service with Visionary eyes, not with a blaming mentality.

Serve to perfect the works of others, not an island kind of leadership

Take responsibility for everything...in love

Be Calm

While others around you may be generating enough electricity to fuel the national grid, an oasis of calm is reassuring and safe.
Be someone who is in control – of your emotions, the situation, the outcome.
Respond, don’t react.

Be current.

In his excellent book: Embodied Leadership, Pete Hamill recommends a daily practice of reading for at least 20 minutes a day. He argues that being focused, making notes, and putting into action what you read will mean you will...

‘…notice a difference in your knowledge and understanding of your leadership, your organization and your industry, and so will those around you!'

The powerplay is more like political leadership, but sincere leaders and world changers must be very careful to maintain equilibrium. Most people have heard the line "Power corrupts..."

But why and how does power corrupt leaders?"

The answer is complex but fairly clear.

Leadership, at its core, is all about power and influence.

Leaders use their power to get things done.

A simple distinction is between two forms of power.

Socialized power is the power used to benefit others. We hope that our elected officials have this sort of power in mind and are primarily concerned with the best interests of their constituents.

The other form of power is called personalized power, and it is using power for personal gain.

Importantly, these two forms of power are not mutually exclusive.

A leader can use his or her power to benefit others, but can also gain personally.
There are no poor former Presidents.

The obvious problem is when personalized power dominates, the leader gains, often at the followers' expense.

Power has advantages and disadvantages for leaders.

On the positive side, power makes leaders more assertive and confident and certain of their decisions. This enables them to move forward on chosen courses of action.

Leaders must use power to "get the job done."

On the negative side, the more people possess power, the more they focus on their own egocentric desires and the less able they are to see others' perspectives.
Some people are simply power hungry and prone to use their power to subjugate others - they are "leaders from hell"

Also worthy of note is the fact that power is not something limited to power-hungry individuals or organizations; it is part of every social interaction where people have the capacity to influence one another’s states, which is really every moment of life.
So power is not something we should (or can) avoid, nor is it something that necessarily involves domination and submission.

We are negotiating power in every instant of our social lives (and in our dreams as well).
When we seek equality, we are seeking an effective balance of power, not the absence of power.
We use it to win consent and social cohesion, not just compliance.
To be human is to be immersed in power dynamics...

There’s more on this to come…

This is nice but it also got me wondering if leadership is a natural talent acquired from birth or is leadership developed over time ? ?

Everyone is born with the potential to lead but not everyone has leadership skills.

In types and shadow, it is just like the orange seed. It has the potential to become an orange tree but we know not all seeds eventually go on to become trees. This doesn't negate the fact that all the while, the seed had what it takes to be that tree. Certain factors have to come to play for that to be actualized.

Any man can become a leader but choices differ. I hope you get my drift. Do you?

Yh thanks for the clarification
