The authoritarian regime in place believes that the feature film falsely portrays his country as a "haven for criminals" from around the world.
The Kingsman action film: The Golden Circle was banned in Cambodia, the authoritarian regime in place having deemed it falsely portrayed the country as a "haven for criminals" from around the world. The Hollywood comedy directed by Matthew Vaughn follows a British spy agency looking for a notorious drug dealer hiding in a temple in the middle of the Cambodian jungle.
The film, which was not filmed in Cambodia, is considered "unacceptable" by Bok Borak, in charge of cinema at the Ministry of Culture, confirming on Friday to AFP "banning this film in our country."
Not only does Cambodia appear to be "a haven for criminals," but the film "presents one of our temples as a place of drug production, where people are killed," said the representative of the government of Hun Sen, Prime Minister in power for more than 30 years. At the heart of the debate is the resemblance of the temple of the film with the temple Ta Prohm in Angkor, which is already the subject of a scene in Lara Croft.
Simon Choo, director of Westec Media, who planned to distribute the film in the country, described the decision as "futile and immature" with the Phnom Penh Post. In order to comply with the requirements of the Ministry of Culture, the distributor had erased "all the traces of Cambodia mention" of the feature film. Simon Choo believes the ministry has not viewed the edited version of the film.
Cambodia is known to be a hub of drug trafficking, foremost among which is methamphetamine and heroin, but also as a haven for criminals from around the world on the run, such as neighboring Thailand.
Stifled opposition
The authoritarian regime of Hun Sen has embarked on an opposition choking operation, stopping or pushing opponents accused of fomenting a "color revolution" in the July 2018 legislative elections, with Washington's support. Hun Sen pronounced almost daily anti-American diatribes, posing as the protector of the Nation and its identity.
It is not his first claw against organizations that he considers to be detrimental to the reputation of his country. In August, he ordered the closure of an American NGO helping child prostitutes in his country after a CNN report he considered an "insult". The dictator finally turned back.
