The movie banned in 53 countries - "Cannibal Holocaust" - review

in #movie7 years ago

Cannibal Holocaust is a gruesome story of a group of people that disappeared in the Amazon forest. Their main aim was to film cannibal tribes as a part of a documentary, but they never came back home to share their stories. Everything that was left were movies that they managed to film. Cannibal Holocaust was released in 1980, directed by Italian director Ruggero Deodato. Even though this movie was filmed more than 35 years ago, it is still very controversial, mostly because of the on-screen killings of animals, such as a turtle.

Harold Monroe was a professor that agreed to lead a rescue team and travelled to the Amazon rainforest. He managed to find the tapes and bring them back to US. Viewing the footage wasn't the most pleasure things he did, but it clearly opened his eyes. One of the most memorable quotes of his was: "I wonder who the real cannibals are", as we may all wonder when a Brodcasting System wants to show the films to the entire country as a documentary. While looking for sensation they forgot about how big of the impact it may leave on the audience. That's the moment when you start to think about what the movie is really about.

I really liked this movie, even though I watched it late at night, I couldn't go to sleep not finishing it. The story itself is not too original, but the way it is shown deserves the applaud. How many directors were accused of murder of their actors on set after all? We still have to remember it was filmed so many years ago, so imagine the impact of the movie back in 1980. I clearly do not respect killings of the animals and knowing that it was a real animal getting killed, made me feel even worse while watching the movie. However, this movie is a great representation of a quote, that "Every story has two sides". With every step of the filmmakers we are getting a chance to know exactly what happened and why the local tribes reacted how they did.

I can't recommend this movie to people under 18. If you want to watch it, please think about the movie a bit more, than just the cannibalistic part of it.
