How movies affects the perception of women in relationships

The movies today, range from action, drama, family and the most prominent one ROMANCE.

Over the decade directors have focused mainly on portraying romance in Nigerian/African setting with a little Hollywood inspiration .

In most Nigerian movies especially the romantic ones, it is sometimes expected that the man in the relationship spends more on his woman and it also portrays the fact that without money the woman will not be comfortable in a relationship. This has affected the mentality of it's viewers especially the female ones, who now believe that because a girl has issues with her boyfriend because of his financial constraint most girls just believe that the financial status of the boyfriend determines the success of the relationship.

I met with some ladies who shared their views on it affects relationships, one of them Joanna(not her real name) is of the opinion that "Nolly wood movies have both positive and negative effects depending on the storyline and the message they try to pass to the audience, It is positive when it encourages couples to stick together and work out their relationship during difficulties and hard times e.g poverty, sickness , financial insecurities , infidelity and family factor where the family do not approve the relationship but still dey decide to stay together these are some of the positive notions, while it is negative when they would want their relationship to be like that which they have seen on T.V failing to realise that they are sometimes fictional and false storyline line which do not happen in reality so when one partner fails to behave the way he or she expect according to what they have seen it causes a strain in the relationship.

So I think movies affect relationships both positively and negatively and I think couples should work more on themselves instead of setting standards based on movies.

Most people (i am also a victim), tend to expect everything they watch in a movie to actually happen in reality but that can't be the case these movie are just make believe and things are not perfect in the world.

Let me know what you think.

Sort:

I think movies especially Nollywood movies tend to be unrealistic when it comes to relationships and marriages, if you fill your head with things we see in movies, you'll believe everything has a happy ending. Typical rich boy meets poor girl at the end they stick together not minding everything and everyone but in real life it's different. Everyone should know how to separate fiction from reality. I love joanna's perception ☺

Totally agree with you, people should learn to distinguish between fiction and reality.

I believe what we see, watching movies include shapen our perceptions.
We are products of our thoughts and imaginations.
However, we shouldn't believe everything we see on screen but take lessons from most considering the fact that some movies are based on real life experiences.

We really are products of our imagination but we should learn to distinguish imagination from reality.

To an extent, I believe movies, Nollywood movies, are a reflection of the culture of Nigeria--our thoughts and approach, in relation to this topic, relationship. And as regards its effect, well, we are bombard with plethora of information daily, its let to us to choose that which we will imbibe. Yes movies are for entertainment and are fictional, but there are valuable lessons to be learnt. So it goes both ways

We should learn not to use the lessons learnt from these movies as a yardstick for measuring our perceptions about actual relationships.
