Poetic Film Review: Hostel (2005)
In lands of distant Slovakia,
A Hollywood film did lay,
In darkness, it was born,
To shock and horrify all day.
Hostel, the film, so bold,
Made Slovakia's name grow cold,
A hellhole, where the rich preyed,
On innocents, in gruesome ways.
Paxton, Josh, and Óli, three,
Traveled through Europe, wild and free,
But in Slovakia's dark embrace,
Their fates were sealed, in a cruel race.
Svetlana and her twin, a lure,
Lured the friends to a deadly choir,
A factory, a chamber of pain,
Where psychopaths delighted in their gain.
Slovakians, angered, took umbrage,
At the film's portrayal, a painful rage,
A Third World hellhole, they cried,
Not the Slovakia they knew inside.
The violence, so graphic and raw,
Exploitative, some did not allow,
But Roth's intent, a tribute to grind,
A transgressive quality, to unwind.
Misogyny, some did accuse,
Women portrayed, as weaker and loose,
But Roth's vision, a homage to old,
A grindhouse style, that would not grow old.
The success, a shift in the genre,
A new wave of horror, did emerge,
A chasm between nations, a theme,
Americans versus the world, it seemed.
The film's impact, a sequel, did spawn,
But none could replicate its fame,
A dark legacy, that still remains,
Hostel, a name, that still brings pain.
Though some may find it disturbing, still,
A good piece of cinema, it does fulfill,
A cautionary tale, of the wealthy few,
Who prey on the weak, and never look through.
