Poetic Film Review: Kozara (1962)

In Kozara's mountainous terrain, a tale unfolds,
Of sacrifice and bravery, where heroes are told.
A cinematic monument, born from ashes and pain,
To honor the fallen, and the struggle in vain.

Veljko Bulajić's lens, a window to the past,
Reconstructs the battle, where Partisans fought to last.
The Kozara Offensive, a counter-insurgency might,
Launched by German forces, with Axis powers in sight.

The Partisans, outgunned and outnumbered, yet they stood,
Their mobility hindered, by refugees, young and old.
The Axis forces closed in, with brutal intent and design,
Leaving the Partisans to face, a desperate and fatal line.

The film, a tribute to the fallen, a testament to their might,
A celebration of sacrifice, in the dark of night.
Bulajić's direction, a masterful hand, guides the way,
Through mass tracking shots, and combat scenes, in a chaotic sway.

The narrative, a collective voice, a chorus of the people's cry,
A departure from traditional heroes, in a Communist sky.
The characters, a fragmented tapestry, woven with care,
Some well-developed, others lost, in melodrama's snare.

The cinematography, a black-and-white canvas, stark and cold,
The score, a melodramatic heartbeat, that echoes through the old.
The film, a monument to memory, a historical testament true,
A portrayal of events, accurate and authentic, anew.

The cast, a talented ensemble, delivers performances so fine,
Dragomir Felba, a father's tragic loss, a heartbreaking shrine.
Ljubiša Samardžić and Milena Dravić, ill-fated lovers, lost in the fray,
Velimir "Bata" Živojinović, a Partisan's desperate way.

The film, a technical marvel, a war film of its time,
A historical reconstruction, that echoes through the rhyme.
Though not a classic, it stands, as a testament to the past,
A tribute to the fallen, and the struggle that will forever last.
