In shadowed corridors of Hollywood's fame,
A star's persona shifts, in an unexpected game.
Kevin Costner, known for All-American roles,
Unveils a darker side in Mr. Brooks' cold, psychological toils.

A businessman, family man, with secrets deep,
The "Thumbprint Killer," his dark alter ego to keep.
For two years, he suppresses, but one fateful night,
The violent urges surge, as "Marshall" ignites.

A witness, "Mr. Smith," blackmails and lurks,
As the protagonist navigates his deadly works.
His daughter, Jane, shows signs of similar strife,
As Detective Atwood investigates with her own life.

The script, co-written by Evans and Gideon, is odd,
Exploiting society's fascination with serial blood.
Preposterous, some might say, but Evans plays it straight,
With a quick pace and solid direction, he keeps it in check and waits.

Costner's performance is lauded, a transformation bold,
Emulating Stewart, a darker path to unfold.
Convincingly, he portrays the man torn,
Between moral integrity and the darkness he's born.

Supporting Costner is Hurt, as Marshall he excels,
Their mental conversations, well-crafted, and easy to feel.
Yet, the film's clichés and unconvincing roles,
Lessen its impact, and at the box office, it shows.

Though ambitious and intriguing, Mr. Brooks falls short,
Its darkness, not enough to garner a sequel's birth.
The stage was set for further exploration of Earl,
But audiences seemed to prefer television's similar appeal, like Dexter's cold, calculated steal.
