Poetic Film Review: West Side Story (1961)

In twilight's hush, where city streets do sleep,
A tale of love and strife, in West Side's deep,
A world of gangs, of hate, of racial pride,
Where Tony and Maria's love did softly glide.

Like Romeo and Juliet, their hearts did beat,
In fair Verona's streets, now New York's concrete seat,
Their love, a flame, that burned, a guiding light,
In darkness, hate, and violence, of endless night.

The Jets and Sharks, in bitter strife,
Did clash, their knives, and zip guns, a deadly life,
The police, a fragile peace, did strive to keep,
But hate and fear, did simmer, in each troubled sleep.

Robert Wise's direction, a masterful hand,
Did guide the tale, of love, and a tragic stand,
Leonard Bernstein's score, a symphony divine,
Did lift the story, to a realm, sublime and fine.

Stephen Sondheim's lyrics, a poet's gentle touch,
Did weave a narrative, of love, and a tender clutch,
Jerome Robbins' choreography, a dance, so bold,
Did bring the streets, to life, in a story, yet untold.

The cinematography, a kaleidoscope of color bright,
Did paint the town, in hues, of hope, and endless night,
The production design, a masterpiece, of art and craft,
Did transport viewers, to a world, both gritty, and aloft.

The flaws, of casting, a critique, of days gone by,
Do fade, in light, of performances, that touch the sky,
Natalie Wood, and Richard Beymer, their roles, did play,
With hearts, that beat, in love's sweet way.

The years, have passed, and time, has left its mark,
But West Side Story, remains, a classic, in the dark,
A testament, to love, that conquers, hate, and fear,
A tale, that whispers, hope, in the midst, of tears.

So let this story, be a guiding light,
That shines, in darkness, and leads, through the night,
For in its heart, a message, beats, so strong,
Of love, that conquers, all, and right, where wrong, does belong.
