Poetic Television Review: Gone for Goode (Homicide: Life on the Street, S1X01, 1993)
In streets of Baltimore, where shadows play,
A decade oft maligned, yet TV's seeds were sown to stay,
The 90s, a time of grit, of crime, of strife,
Gave birth to Homicide, a show that cut like a knife.
Inspired by Simon's book, a chronicle of the streets,
A year on killing streets, where death's dark whispers meet,
The show premiered, Gone for Goode, a title that would tell,
A story of violence, of loss, of lives that fell.
With jump cuts and handheld cameras, a modern style was born,
Hyperrealism, a gritty feel, that would leave its mark and scorn,
The ensemble cast, a diverse and complex crew,
Detectives with quirks, with flaws, with stories anew.
Steve Crosetti's conspiracies, Meldrick's laid-back air,
Beau Felton's machismo, Kay Howard's determination to share,
John Munch, a radical, a character of enduring might,
Frank Pembleton's intellect, Tim Bayliss's fresh and fearful sight.
The episode balanced darkness with moments of levity and jest,
A nuanced approach, that would find its way to the best,
The title's reference, a hit-and-run, a victim unseen,
A killer's confession, prompted by foolishness, a dark humor serene.
But the episode's culmination, a stark and serious note,
The discovery of Adena Watson, a tragic, real-life quote,
A story arc inspired, by Latonya Wallace's case,
A poignant reminder, of the darkness that the show would embrace.
The success of Gone for Goode, was evident from its start,
An Emmy for Levinson, a testament to the show's heart,
Homage paid in later seasons, through callbacks and references fine,
A nod to the episode, that started it all, a story divine.
Homicide: Life on the Street, a show that paved the way,
For The Wire, and other series, that would come to stay,
A Golden Age of Television, that the 90s would unfold,
A decade of innovation, of storytelling, of characters to behold.
