Thoughts on Spider-Man: Homecoming

in #movies7 years ago

So here it goes, Tom Holland as Spider-Man? Fucking awesome, I can't complain. Pulls off the balance between the nerdy Peter Parker yet reels in that Spider-Man smart ass attitude pretty damn well. I never loved Tobey Maguire in the role, and Andrew Garfield really pulled more of a jerky than smart ass Spider-Man with a lukewarm portrayal of Peter. The other problem with Maguire and Garfield? They were too damn old to be playing high school aged characters.

Spider-Man (2002)
27 year old high school student, Peter Parker

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
29 year old high school student, Peter Parker

Anyways, you see my point. These guys aren't fooling anyone.

Of course, for those who are fans, we received a good dose of Spidey in Captain America 3. And needless to say, he might well have been the best part of the movie, or at least one of the ones fans were looking forward to more than Tony and Cap's drama. Conveniently placed security camera captures the Winter Soldier murdering Tony's parents?

Oh, come on!
Sorry, moving along!

So I'll say it, I like Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man a lot. Young and immature enough still to be a convincing high school student. I get the whole master and apprentice thing they're trying to pull with Tony and Peter, but it kind of takes away the whole role of Peter's Uncle Ben's influence on his life. If Uncle Ben did in fact ever exist in the MCU?

Just check out that fresh face.

The problem with Homecoming? I'm sorry to say it, but Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr., while not physically present throughout the entire movie is seemingly omnipresent throughout. From the constant mention of the "Stark Internship" and Peter's numerous phone calls to Happy asking when the next mission is, to Spider-Man's suit. It felt like it turned Spider-Man, who is an interesting enough character on his own, to an Iron Man Jr. minus the actual armor.

News from the SDCC is that Infinity War will have Peter wearing that Iron Spiderish suit that Tony offered at the end of Homecoming. Unfortunately, I couldn't pull up a picture of the gaudy thing, but I'm liking a Spider-Man with just a bit less tech and a bit less influence from the MCU's Tony Stark.

Anyways, don't get me wrong, I'm an Iron Man fan, I'm a Robert Downey Jr. fan who enjoys his portrayal of Tony Stark. That being said however, he's just a bit more overplayed than I would personally like.

Hey, you know what, I'm just looking forward to some more hot Aunt May.
