Knives Out – Movie Review
This movie is ridiculously fun and entertaining. On the one hand it is a very clever who did movie with an amazing cast, on the other hand it has some ridicules plot devices that made me laugh out loud, but in a good way.
Rian Johnson directed and wrote this movie. I am not sure how I feel about Star Wars: The Last Jedi which he both wrote and directed, but I know how I feel about Knives Out, I loved it.
This is where I would like to take a moment to tell you that I just realized from Honest Trailers that Christopher Plummer played Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. I just feel old. He is pretty brilliant in this movie as the dead Harlan Thrombey, who is a famous writer in this movie with plenty on tricks up his own sleeve. His death is ruled a suicide but privet investigator Benoit Blanc (I have no idea what is this name) is not so sure. He was hired to investigate the matter, so maybe it is not a suicide after all. Daniel Craig is hilarious in this role. What on earth is this accent meant to be? What it was is pretty funny. Ana de Armas plays Marta Cabrera, a privet nurse who helps Thrombey with his medical needs and just keeps him company. They are the main characters of this movie.
The rest of famous cast has a much smaller role then you think. Mostly because there are just so many of them. Chris Evans is Captain Asshole, I mean Ransom Drysdale, the spoiled grandson. I watched this movie for him and boy was it fun to watch him. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Linda Drysdale, his mother. Don Johnson plays Richard Drysdale, her husband. Toni Collette plays Joni Thrombey, Harlan's other daughter. Michael Shannon plays Walt Thrombey, Harlan's son. Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell play the grandchildren, Meg Thrombey and Jacob Thrombey respectively. We also have, LaKeith Stanfield as Lieutenant Elliott. It is a very glamorous cast and the movie uses each one of them beautifully. And dresses them beautifully, where did they get these amazing sweaters? Everyone is dressed so great in this movie. The cast is obviously fantastic, you can't go wrong here.
This is a really strange who did it movie. The plot structure is highly unusual, which is great from a genre that produced endless movie. It totally has Agatha Christie vibes. The mystery and the really strange detective all work perfectly along with the house. This house is a character all on its own. Also, I guess it helped make the movie cheap, the fact that it was mostly filmed in one location. But three generations of a family living together is a receipt for disaster. But, man was it a really entertaining movie.
This movie also has a message that some people might not like. Some American people might not like. I don't know. As I am not American, it didn't feel relevant to me, so I just had a blast and so did everyone I watched it with.
I am totally ready for a sequel which is moving forward quickly as Lionsgate really needs more franchises and this is their new baby franchise. Rian Johnson will write and direct the sequel which will star Daniel Craig as the strange detective and it will have a new cast of famous actors. A new thanksgiving tradition is being planned here and I totally onboard. Are you?
