DIY - Tutorial: How to trim or narrow a pair of trouserssteemCreated with Sketch.

Hello community! How are you? Today I want to share a job that I recently did, it's about shortening and narrowing a pair of dress pants, the interesting thing about this example is that the change was notorious.
For this procedure I had to take into account the measurements of the person who will use it: upper knee height, desired length of the trousers and width of the ankle or width of the trousers at ankle height.
I think the most important when narrowing a trouser is not to lose the center of the leg, especially if it is a dress pants, with this I mean we can not shrink the pants on only one side, we must do it symmetrically on both sides.

This is the pants before starting.

The first thing is to locate the height of the knee, the upper part of it; then the final length that must have the pants, and on this last line we will have to mark the width of the final ankle, for example, in this case I had to remove 5 cm to the contour, to keep the center of the pants I reduce 2.5 cm of each side from the original seam towards the center. Finally we join the knee with the width of the ankle (in the photo you can see the vertices highlighted with the orange squares) with a straight line. I hope the image shows clearly what I want to convey to you.

Then we must take into account the hem we will leave to have a neat finish, in a dress pants I leave about 5 cm of fold. Keep in mind that if the trousers were not washed or soaked previously the length could vary, as a precaution I rinse it before starting to work.
The next step is to secure the two parts of the legs with pins to prevent the fabric from being run at the time of sewing.

Now yes to the machine: retake the original side seam of the garment from the knee and sew following the line drawn.

Remember to check that the legs were the same width; once this is done we proceed to cut the excess leaving the same seam margin that the garment originally had, I clarify it because it can vary. Depending on the type of fabric I suggest sewing with the zig zag stitch the edges so that the fabric does not fray.
Iron the new seams and hem very well to make it easier to sew later. As in this case it is a dress pants I sew the hem by hand with invisible stitch, depending on the pants or fashion could be done with the machine.

On these sides the chupines or narrow pants are very fashionable, so I hope that this tutorial will be useful to modify a new pants that is very wide, or so long that the narrow is lost, as in this case; or to modify an old-fashioned old one.

I thank you very much for reading!!

Until the next post !!
