I am starting a series of posts in which I will show you the whole process of making hip hop / boom bap / lofi type beats in Ableton Live.I mean, I will try to publish one part of this process every friday so you have plenty of time to the next lesson to learn perfect what you learned in the previous lesson/post and continue to build your beat. Honestly speaking, I could post lessons every one or two days but I am too lazy to write and record it every day. If I get inspiration for a new lesson I may publish it before. So stay tuned every friday for new lesson.

I wanted to start an easier way to show you how to do a drum beat for hiphop ... and then I figured out that after sampling you probably had to change the drum beat if it doesn't fit with the sample and that would complicate the
the whole thing and that's why we start with sampling.

I don't know in how many parts this tutorial will be but the main things and lessons that will be shown to you in this order are :

  1. Sampling
  2. Drum Beat
  3. Bass Line
  4. Other stuff you can add to your beat

1.Lesson Sampling

The first thing to do is find the sample you will use. For this tutorial, I chose the song Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw - The Difference. If you like it, you can use the same sample, if you don't find your own.

  • After you find your sample put it in Ableton Live in Audio Track and keep track of what I'm doing in the video.

00:33

The first thing I do is a simple hip hop beat over which I will play the sample. I'm just doing it for the sample base. Later we will change it and make it better and fit it with the sample. If you want, you can put an already finished hiphop drum beat loop or skip this part and work without a drum beat.

  • a detailed description of how to make a drum beat bike will show you in the 2. tutorial so you don't bother with it too much for now.

04:35

Here I start with sampling. It is good to listen to the whole song you are sampling and you chose the best parts. From this one, I took the first part, but sometimes some of the best samples are hidden further in the song.

05:39

I have cut this sample into two parts. The first part will be a base and from other one I will (try) extract only these flutes.

When you divide it in two parts by croping parts and duplicating it, try to set it to beat (turn on metronome or drum beat and listen). They dont't have to be exactly accurate, but if they do, it will make it easier for you to do with it later.

08:09

After you wrap it, freeze it and flatten it.

08:54

Slice to a New MIDI track - Set Create one slice per 1/2 Note in this case and it will divide this sample in 16 parts because it lasts 8 bars or pre warp marks if you slice it per warp marks or want to make it in smaller parts than go 1/4 , 1/8.

Sllicing Preset - Built-in

09:14

Increase the release to 60 to play the full part when you press pad.
Now play those samples along with the drumbeat to find the ones that match you. After you find them record it live or simply draw it in clip/piano roll. Then edit and quantize it if some of the samples get out of the beat.

15:02

Same thing is with the other part,in which I added effects to it, by which I somewhat isolated the rest of the semplate and left only a flute.

  • Hope this video helped you. If you don't understand something, feel free to ask!
