Original Pilipino Music (OPM) - How it become my all-time favorite music!
Original Pilipino Music (OPM) - My all-time favorite music!
Hello everyone! Upon scrolling down my facebook page earlier today, I stumbled upon this vintage photo shared by Kamikazee in their facebook page. It was captioned “lumang tao” which translates to “old men” or “old people”.
I laughed so hard about the photo and then it made me reminisce the past, specifically my high school days when I used to listen to their music (both Kamikazee and Parokya ni Edgar bands). Those days were the best; the days were my playlist was composed of nothing but only Original Pilipino Music (OPM).
So in this blog, I will share with you how I got hooked up with my current music preferences and who influenced me with these. I will also share with you my favorite Filipino bands and why I enjoyed listening to them.
Well I can say that my choice of music was actually influenced by my father’s. Although majority of his collections were of foreign bands such as Eagles, Scorpions, Air Supply etc., he had this collections of classic OPM songs including those of Boyfriends’, VST & Company as well as APO Hiking Society, Eraserheads, Rivermaya, etc.
During that time, compact discs weren’t so popular in the Philippines and I used to listen to the radio instead or sometimes to the cassette tape collections of my father. (If I remembered it right, I was 6 or 7 years old that me). From there, I started to appreciate music and begun to admire certain musicians.
Two of my most favorite musicians that time were Boholano and Cebuano singers, Yoyoy Villame and Max Surban. Both musicians are famous in the Philippines especially in Visayas and Mindanao and I admit that I really loved their music because of their hilarious lyrics. In fact, I still listened to their songs even at present.
I also listened to the rap songs of Andrew E. and even memorized some of his songs’ lyrics. Although my favorite rapper is Gloc 9, he wasn’t that popular during that time or I haven’t just heard of him. I started listening to his music when I was a 4th or 5th grader in elementary (couldn’t remember the exact year).
That same year or the following year/s, I was already listening to Parokya ni Edgar, one of my favorite Filipino bands! It was only during high school that I started listening to Kamikazee (my all-time favorite Filipino band) when my father bought a CD of their Maharot album.
I really love listening to Kamikazee, through them I discovered that I was actually born a natural rocker/rock star LOL! They are my first love in the ground of Philippine rock music! That is why I was really heartbroken and saddened when they announced on 2015 that they were disbanding the band. Glad that they’re back now LOL!
It was during that time that my playlist was comprised of almost entirely OPM (approximately just 5% were foreign) and of course, majority of the songs are sung by Kamikazee. My favorite songs that time include Narda, Martyr Nyebera, Chiksilog, Lucky (A cover of Britney Spears’ song), My Tender Bear, Director’s Cut and so many more to mention! LOL!
Thank you so much for taking the time reading my post! I really appreciate it! Please feel free to share your thoughts and your favorite Pinoy bands in the comment section below. I will upvote good comments at 15% - 35%.
