D16 Nepheton Plugin Review - Pastel Sonic

The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer. It’s THE drum machine. You can hear it on a plethora of Top 40 songs since its 1980 release. Entire genres, including the current trap craze and the EDM madness earlier this decade, are indebted to the 808. Yet somehow, despite innumerable sample packs featuring its sounds, there is a lack of plugins accurately emulating it.
@d16group, a Polish company, has created the best one. Nepheton faithfully recreates the machinery of the 808, right down to the sequencer. But the ability to trigger it externally and route each instrument to a separate mix channel within your DAW, in addition to not needing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a real 808 or reissue, make it perhaps more attractive than the original - at least for those more interested in using its sounds than collecting gear.
The drum machine world is overwhelmingly comprised of samplers, all more or less the same as one another. But by not competing there, by creating an exact emulation of the 808, D16 group one-ups the competition. Sure, you could load up some 808 samples and **almost** have those legendary sounds, but why not just get the thing itself? Nepheton is as close as most of us can get.
