Welcome to #discovermusic, a weekly blog written with the intent of sharing new and upcoming music styles.
This week: Jpop, a term used by us westerners to categorize the culturally different Japanese pop music with all its variations such as J-rock and J-metal, all though in Japan Jpop stands for ALL japanese music.
Generally singed by Idols, young popular teens, and written by production bands behind them.

If you watch anime or play Japanese games you most likely came across some songs in the genre, even the American and European movies started picking up on the Jpop demand and are slowly inserting snippets of Jpop songs where appropriate. If you watched Altered Carbon on Netflix then you heard a BabyMetal song playing in the background at one point!

Speaking of which; There is more to this genre than the "pop", lately there's been a rise of metal and rock musicians mixing the idol element in their live and video performances, examples such as BabyMetal, BandMaid and LadyBaby have redefined the concept of weird. That's right, if you thought Jpop and Kpop was weird, then try watching a Jmetal video and tell me you haven't giggled even once. Don't worry, I'll link you a few later on.

But it's worth mentioning there isn't just weird in the genre, there's also chill music and songs about teenage love.
That being said here's some songs to introduce you better in Jpop as a whole:

Fredric, with a normal song

Fredric, with a normal song and kind of "odd" video? still great in my opinion

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu with a song that all my friends agree is super cool, and the video is great

BabyMetal: when Dragonforce and Jpop idols collide, seriously tho: the instrumental part is really complex, the band behind them is made out of the best Japanese musicians.

LadyBaby: When Jpop idols collab with an Australian bodybuilder. This video made me shout out loud "What the F**k?!"

DEADLIFT LOLITA: when the same Australian bodybuilder collabs with a Japanese bodybuilder and make some kickass heavy metal

Bassy: some actually normal jpop for once. Bassy and his girlfriend make this fantastic music, unfortunately since Japanese music culture is the way it is, they don't have a spotify page so finding their stuff is really hard. You might have to import their CDs from Japan if you like them.

Lastly i give you Kinoko Teikoku with this chill rock album, very relaxing!
