Frameworks Issue #14: How to Listen to Music
Wait a minute.... There's a "How-to" on listening to music??
You bet there is! 😃
I posted in an earlier blog post titled, 'Frameworks Issue #10: The Power of Your Sound', on how sound / music affects not just our emotions but our ideas, our thoughts, our perception and it shapes worlds...
I talked about how sound plays a role in shaping the way we believe and how it affects the world around us. You can check out that post of which I also shared a link to a company that creates music by taking your dna. Yep you can send your DNA sample to them and they'll make YOU into a song!
Whilst that post was focused on what we say and speak, today's post will be on the other end of it. LISTENING!
Now........ onto today's word!
Some Music Philosophy
Here's a quote by Plato who was a philosopher but made a lot of emphasis on what music.
“I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning” - Plato
Another man called Andrew Fletcher, a Scottish writer from the 15th century said,
Let me make the songs of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws. - Andrew Fletcher
Short story time!
My brother went to ICOM (International College of Music) and shared about what a lecturer of his once said while teaching a subject called "Music Appreciation". The lecturer said that, "If you listen to crap music, you'll play crap music. You listen to rubbish, you play rubbish". My brother said he was referring to POP music and emphasizing learning to listen to jazz but I believe he wasn't saying that all POP music are trash (although that's probably EXACTLY what he was saying), but the message is clear, that what you hear affects you, one way or another.
Like in our current day and age where there is great emphasis on eating healthily, I like to propose to watch what kind of music we devour. For me, since I know that music affects me as a person, I'd wanna only take in the good stuff.......... healthy stuff............ nutritional stuff......... It's like, listening in a way that'll make you healthy.
Listen in such a way that will make you healthy.
To me, good music is music that either has a purposeful message or just simply music that makes you happy; upbeat, funky, quarter note pulse kinda music. (first time using a semicolon. Did I use it right? 😃)
I understand that composers of songs often relate a message of their emotions which is therapeutic to them like how writing and blogging is to a lot of us Steemians, and I'm not apposed to or saying that they shouldn't create music like such and such, but as a listener, I'd wanna listen to music that keeps the good vibes on. I can't control what people produce but I can choose what I listen to.
And if I'm not in a good mood, I normally don't listen to music because as much as we we like to listen to music to drown out our negative emotions, it often amplifies it!
So bad mood + lyrics that relay frustration = Very bad day.... worst than it would've been. Do that long enough and you'll have prolong misery. Unnecessary if you ask me.
A lof of the time, music that talks about negativity or brokenness sell the hottest and that is because it either relates with us factually or emotionally. I'm not appose to music like that however I'd like to propose a different way of approaching and listening to music. A more responsible way of listening to music if you would say.
I heard from a drums clinic CD that I watched (forgot what the name was), that goes something like this......
"Music is not just in the notes that are played, but in the notes that are not played. It's not just in the sounds, it's in silence as well. Music is the composition of variations of sound and silence".
My recommendation, if you're in a bad mood, instead of noise, be in silence instead. Listen to the most encouraging voice in your head and not the realest emotion.
Music often amplifies your current state of being. Sometimes be in silence instead. Listen to the most encouraging voice in your head!
Tobu / 7obu - Colors
What better way to conclude than to share some music! 😃
If you're new to the music that I share, most of what I share are either undiscovered artist or low profile ones from various genres that aren't mainstream music or what you'd normally hear on the radio.
Haven't been consistently sharing my list of music the past few weeks but it's back with a series of artist that do........... house music.
So for this coming 3 weeks I'll be sharing with you some melodical house music and to start it off, here's a guy who goes under the screen name Tobu or 7obu. I'm sure you've heard his music as background tracks for commercials or those football highlight reels on YouTube which is where I first heard Tobu's music.
Anywayz............ Hope you are blessed and gain more clarity in certain things through reading this. It was a mashup between two things I do which is sharing "undiscovered" music / musicians and the "Frameworks" blog. Didn't plan for it to happen but it did and I hope you're encouraged and edified.
Here's this gem of a tune by Tobu. Until next time, full STEEM ahead and peace out! ✌️
note: listen with headphones for full enjoyment
Every week I'll be posting at least 1 song of my list of various genres I listen to. Stay tune for more interesting tunes you don't usually hear on the radio.
- Tristan Prettyman - Love Love Love / Indi-Pop
- Alan Gogoll - Owl's Friend / Bell Harmonics & Fingerstyle
- Dream Theater - Universal Mind / Progressive Metal
- Christopher Tin - Baba Yetu / Orchestra & Choir
- Justin Johnson - Roots Music
- Neil Zaza - I’m Alright / Melodical Rock
TOPIC FINDER: I always enjoy talking with people on topics they like to converse about so if you have a "How-To" or a question related to life, leave a comment and I'll write my thoughts on it. Oh and I'll be upvoting comments just for engaging

Interesting. I believe in listening to emotional songs as an output, in fact I write most of my songs as emotional ballads for people to feel. However, I completely get the perspective you're coming from and its true. Lot's to debate and chat about. Which year was your brother in ICOM?
Great man. Bless ya!
I think about 15 years back. He only did foundations when they still had such a thing :)
Lately I have been enjoying listening to music without words haha
I really recommend you to try some song of Ludovico Einaudi, he is a great pianist and I discovered him because one of his songs was used in the movie The Intouchables. I didn't knew I liked piano until I started to hear his songs hahah
Woh thanks for sharing! Will definitely check it out. Thanks!
Hi danielwong, I'm kind of mixmatching music and song. What about melody?.are they all the same meaning?
Melody is basically a combination of pitch and rhythm. So anything with that is called a melody :)
I enjoyed 'Colors' from Tobu or 7obu! Hillsongs nowadays these type of music as well. Will definitely get around listening to the rest of the list!
Cool. Cheers man :)
@danielwong I personally love Indi pop and I will keep my eyes on your weekly music list bro :)
Thanks for tuning in man. Appreciate it :)
hey @danielwong, enjoy the article and it resonates with me:)
Saying I love music, like saying the 2*2 = 4 (obvious) but it is true. I even have the music sign tattoo hihi..
Answering your question I like the topic of personal development, traveling and discovering yourself through discovering the place, topic of love and happiness :)
Cheers!
Thats very true! I can totally relate. Listening to songs about negativity & brokeness during bad times makes me wanna dwell in that emo-ness even more. Hence, i turn to worship songs instead as it brings me breakthrough, hope and all other good things. Nevertheless, there are songs with bad messages but awesome melody. That always make me feel amgong hahaha. 😄
Yes, I have known for a while that music has some effects on us and I have been listening to music that relaxes, calms or just simply makes me happy. I've been listening to a lot of trance and I simply love it.
Trance is so beautiful to me and sometimes it feels like it takes me to a whole different world! I love listening to Above & Beyond, ECO, ilan Bluestone and many others! Here's one song that is absolutely amazing and makes me feel really good! Starts off a bit slow but every second of this song is something... Something powerful!
