This Day in Rock Music History: 1 Jun -- Mrs Robinson
1968: 50 years ago Simon and Garfunkel's single Mrs. Robinson went to No. 1 on the US singles chart. This would be the duo's 2nd No. 1 hit ("The Sound Of Silence" hit No. 1 on Jan 1 of that same year). It would go on to be the first rock song to win a Grammy award for Record of the Year.
The song was inspired by the movie, "The Graduate", but
hit the airwaves over three months prior to the movie's release.
Originally Paul Simon pitched two songs for the movie ("Punky's Dilemma" and "Overs") to filmmaker Mike Nichols. When those were rejected, Simon returned with a re-do of a song he and Garfunkel had been working on named "Mrs. Roosevelt", changing the name to "Mrs. Robinson" to tie in with the movie. The "Dee dee dee..." part was originally filler for yet unwritten lyrics, but Nichols liked it so much, they left it in as is.
