The Paper Kites flying high with new single

in #music4 years ago

The Paper Kites return with new single “For All You Give” featuring UK singer-songwriter Lucy Rose. The song was recorded December 2019 on a cold winter's day, in the upstairs room of her producer Tim’s Brighton home. That sounds suitably atmospheric even without adding in Lucy’s Spanish guitar and the beautifully melded vocals of Lucy and Sam.

The publicity blurb comes with a description of the song as “beautifully restrained, intimate and slow-burning”. Honestly - I don’t think I can come up with a more candid narrative than that. The song opens like a whisper, and progresses melodically with small deliberate pauses adding to the emotive feel, as if they are thinking, remembering events and emotions. The dual voices add to the atmosphere with the tempo and delicate guitar pulling us along in its wake. It is an utterly lovely introduction to The Paper Kites forthcoming album Roses.

The album

‘For All You Give’ is the torchbearer for the new album and is the first taste of The Paper Kites 5th studio effort. Roses, via Nettwerk Records is in post production with a release date pending. With thoughtful songwriting assured, the album includes a host of talented feature artists. “It’s an album of duets - for lack of a better word,” Sam Bentley explains. “A collection of songs we had written and wanted to record with these artists.”

The Roses vocalists were handpicked by The Paper Kites to feature on the new album. “It was first and foremost about finding the voices and artists we felt were right for each song,” says Bentley. Along with Lucy Rose the 10-track album will feature Julia Stone (AU), Nadia Reid (NZ), Maro (PT), Aoife O’Donovan (US), Rosie Carney (UK), Ainslie Wills (AU), Amanda Bergman (SE), Lydia Cole (NZ) & Gena Rose Bruce (AU).

Produced by Sam Bentley & Tom Iansek (#1 Dads, Big Scary), Roses holds the promise of sincere, understated songwriting. If the new single is any indication we can expect a deeply moving collection of songs, helmed by a thoughtful selection of artists.

The band

The Paper Kites are an indie-folk-rock band from Melbourne, Australia. The band was formed in 2010 and consists of Sam Bentley, Christina Lacy, Dave Powys, Josh Bentley and Sam Rasmussen.

They have released four studio albums and four EPs and became well known because of the release of their first single 'Bloom' in 2010. Their most recent albums, On the Train Ride Home and On the Corner Where You Live were both released in 2018.

The Paper Kites sound was originally loosely based around folk music. Sam Bentley's fingerstyle guitar sound is distinctive as is the band's harmonies. The progression of this sound, along with the band's varied inspirations, has pushed them into a range of different genres. When asked about their style of music, Bentley has previously mentioned, "We are whatever we released on the last record".

I played the song for my daughter when I was writing the review, and in her words it “has a vibe similar to Angus and Julia Stone”. She was suitably stoked to hear that Julia would feature on the new album, and then immediately began singing “Bloom” and said, ‘yeah I’d listen to these guys for sure.” I don’t think there’s a higher recommendation, truly. So go ahead and treat your ears with ‘For All You Give’ while we eagerly await a release date for the new album Roses and all its promise, from the talented musicians in The Paper Kites.
