The mystery of the Human Voice:The singing voice
Can we ever fully understand the human voice?Who knows?
Not even the talking robots ever devised can begin to reproduce its extraordinary complexity and emotional power.
The human voice is a thing of great power. We use it to speak, sing, cry, laugh, scream, gossip (lol) and more. The human voice which is as ancient as humanity itself have also undergone latest developments in technology. Our voices are now used to activate machines to prove innocence or guilt in criminal trials, to provide a means of digital communication for people with voice disorders, and a whole lot more which our voices are technologically used for.
THE SINGING VOICE
The singing voice is trained through the repetition of exercises designed to strengthen the larynx and the diaphragm (stomach). The singer is able to control the muscles in the diaphragm and the vocal tract resulting in increased quality of vocal tone which is very important to a singer, and improved vocal texture and more power in vocal projection.
In singing, as we inhale, the diaphragm muscle contracts causing the lungs to expand and air to be drawn into the lungs. As we exhale, the diaphragm will relax and move upward reducing the size of the lungs and causing air to be expelled from the lungs. The exhaled breath is forced out along the trachea and through the vocal folds which are capable of vibrating at an astonishing and awe-inspiring fast rate. The vocal folds must vibrate for voice to exist at all, and it is at this point that the vibration of the vocal folds, together with the power of the exhaling breath, gives rise to the creation of vocal sound.
This sound is shaped by the manipulation of the various structures along the vocal tract, such as the position or location of the tongue and the larynx. The articulators-the parts that makes the diction (clarity of words) of the singer clear and effective are the cheeks, tongue, teeth and lips. These all contribute to vocal articulation.
You can be a good singer if you take your singing exercises very seriously.
